senator ted cruz, you ain't no winston churchill. and this is "hardball," the place for politics. >>> welcome back to "hardball." the first question governor christie was asked at his press conference late this afternoon was about whether the bridge scandal might affect the 2016 presidential run by him. and christie was ready. >> in the long sweep of things, any voters, if they consider this issue at all in considering my candidacy if there ever is one, i got a feeling it will be a very small element of it, if any element at all. >> but the poll numbers tell a much different story. the nbc-wall street journal poll has been tracking christie's national favorability and unfavorability numbers and they've taken a big hit in direct response to the bridge mess. in the latest poll in march, 17% of respondents had a positive view of christie. 32 a negative view. rewind to october 2013 before the scandal erupted and those numbers were transposed, completely inverse. christie was 33% positive back then, 17% negative. they've gone switcheroo s

and you look at ted cruz and get the sense that it's all just a game.ou take any given issue and he looks for the way to set himself up as the voice of purity who is just protecting the conservative base from everyone who is going to sell them out. he needs to exist in the world where everybody else is a sellout. what does he really believe? does he believe in anything? >> i think he was still in a sense seeing that. but i think tactically we can disagree with it here or there but tactically he was somewhat, rather smart in taking that maximus position on obamacare even though it led to the shoutdown. at that time it looked completely disaster rouse for the party and looked like it was going to be repercussions come november. but now with the problems of obamacare, the rollout and number of waivers and so forth, that what looked like a complete grand stand now looks like it was rather pressing. and it has helped him create a rather strong resonance with the base that is going to work with him going forward. >> assuming whether he runs for president or n

we have live team coverage in sant santa cruz. >> we are watching some rough surf out there, all part of the same storm system that krafrcra up the winds on friday into this morning. we have been seeing some waves and breakers up to 15to 20 feet. you saw the damage down in santa barbara and continue to see wave heights of up to 13 feet approaching the coast. this is continuing to cause damage to the coast. kim joins us live. those waves have been getting pretty close to you on some of those rocks. >> they've been moving in. in the last couple hours the tide has really come in. this is still relatively calm compared to earlier today when these waves were truly massive. we were told that the water was right up to the santa cruz board walk swallowing the beach. >> it is so clean and fresh right after a storm. it's wonderful. >> mother nature drew quite a crowd today in santa cruz. >> there's a lot of white water, breaking up waves, a lot of activity. it is exciting, almost impossible to stay away from it. at times frightening, at times just breath taking. >> it kept most people at bay, a

and more on, let's say, the south-facing side of the santa cruz mountains. you can see around morgan hill, you're seeing light rain at times. this is moisture left over from yesterday's area of low pressure, kind of being pulled up to the north as a frontal boundary comes in from the west adding more lift through the day so moisture around the bay area giving us mostly cloudy skies. and right around midday will be our best chance for seeing some showers and then a little bit of late-day clearing as we head towards 4:00 and 5:00 this evening. so rain totals really reflecting what you get when you have drizzle at times or light showers. again, those rain totals less than a tenth of an inch and temperatures today running a little cool. right now 55 degrees. you see the drizzle in san jose. heading into the afternoon we'll see highs today near 60 and more opportunities of more significant rainfall coming up in the seven-day forecast. we'll have a full look at that coming up in just a few minutes. kris. >> thanks, rob. >>> back to the breaking news out of the eas
