let's go to steve harrigan in crystal river, florida, with more. what are you seeing?rhaps none more so than in unicoi tennessee just east of knoxville. it was a rural hospital and they try to get the patients out due to quickly rising flood water. i tried to get them out with ambulances because the water was too high in the used boats but it was too windy finally they brought them to the roof and used helicopters to get the patients to safety. not everyone is so fortunate the storm has killed now 39 people over four different states and the number has been rising all afternoon. despite other warnings when you talk to a lot of people many seemed stunned about what has happened here. >> entire houses are missing or flattened in on themselves. >> just didn't expect this to happen. like living over here wasn't something that came across my mind. this is so crazy and it felt so bad for the people's cars that are underwater. >> airports in major highways back open but it could take another day or two for the small business owners, many of them using just squeegees and broom

and then you move up the coast toward places like crystal river.you're going to get a 15 foot storm surge, and then to a 20 foot storm surge. this is something we haven't seen forecast in all my time that i've been reporting here, a 20 foot storm surge. as this thing comes ashore just south of tallahassee, probably in the next couple of hours here, then into the state capital where there are many, many oak trees. they're not used to getting a hurricane in the state capital. usually they weaken before they get that far. but we're likely to see many, many more power outages in north florida. and then this thing will move into atlanta, where there will be a tropical storm force winds in atlanta. so lots of people are in shelters here. lots of people are with neighbors inland. lots of people are without power. and we are also under tornado watches because hurricanes spawned tornadoes. so it's going to be a dark and tense night. we're monitoring the situation and we'll get back to you, greg and heather when we have some more information. we're live in t
