it's near cunningham and highway 101. we are live with an update on the situation. robert it's been a month already. >> reporter: that's right, jessica. the station here remains closed with very limited service. essentially one rescue truck. we found today firsthand how the closure can impact response times. fire engine 16 came to the scene of this multiple vehicle crash today on king road near the 680 onramp. but it took them extra time to get there. it was coming from station 34 about 6 miles further. the engine is set up at station 34 because its home station was closed on december 23rd because of mold problems. it's the possible delays that has the firefighters union concerned about when station 16 will be reopened and when the engine can be put back. >> normally four to six minutes to be on scene. now it's probably twice as long to get water on the fire. >> reporter: the union also points out that even though station 16 has a rescue truck on hand it's not equipped to fight fires. >> i do know there's been multiple fires. some of them going up to multiple alarm

[laughter] but i knew how to fly that machine, at the end. and i knew how to handle emergencies. so we mostly had a positive attitude. we're gonna handle it. >> well, you did but didn't one of your crew mates have a less positive attitude? >> well, mattingly, he was a "what if" guy in the command module. what if this happens, what if that happens? but it was a great blend for our crew. it balanced us out, you know. i was more of a guy, ah, press on! we'll get it done, you know. and he was more conservative, but a good balance for our crew. and i think every crew had to work like that. and it was -- fear is not a bad emotion, if you handle it right. fear gets your adrenaline pumping. and if you panic in fear, you're dead. but if you don't panic but respond with training, when that emotion hits, it's going to help you, actually. and so that's what happened when i fell over. i k
