d.c. virginia and maryland have already pretreated the major roads. last week it took only about two inches to totally snarl the morning commute. it caused hundreds of accidents and canceled school in some districts. >> by 4:00 tomorrow morning, the virginia department of transportation will have 700 snow trucks on the road in northern virginia alone. d-dot's going to have 200 trucks out by 2:00 this morning. and maryland did not give an exact number to us but is asking drivers to delay travel if you can. so doug walk us through this. >> well i think the big thing here is we're going to see a lot less snowfall than we did last week but it's not really going to matter. it only takes a light coating on the surface of the road to create big problems. that's why we have the winter weather advisory in effect for most of the area. nothing on the radar. that storm system still down south, but it's starting to come together. not a ton of moisture with this storm. so again we're not talking a lot o

chris, tonight d.c. homeland security's initial report is revealing more details about what happened specifically when it comes to a communication breakdown. the d.c. fire department recently made a switch to new radios and started using them in december. they tested them and found communication problemsng at the l'enfant plaza metro station. both metro transit and d.c. fire troubleshooted and couldn't find an answer to the problem with the radios. tonight they say radio communication was sporadic. once rescue one arrived metro transit police told them about the stranded passengers and told the rescuers about power to the third rail. rescue one couldn't share information about the battalion fire chief because of the radio communications. so responders communicated face-to-face. we've also learned the first responders went to the wrong tunnel the green line, instead of the yellow line tunnel where the smoke started. once the first responders reached the train, the back doors didn't open also according to

d.c. convention center. the inaugural ball from muriel bows er is slated to start at 7:00 now that she's been sworn in as d.c.'s mayor. here's a look at all of the day's festivities. hi, sam. >> hello, alison. the day began with an interfaith service and then they brought 42-year-old muriel bowser over here to be sworn in as the seventh mayor of the district of columbia. >> i muriel elizabeth bowser do solemnly swear. >> muriel bowser took the oath of office shortly after 11:00 this morning in a ceremony that saw sworn in karl racine as the first elected attorney general and seven council members. before it started, the jazz combo played in the outer hall as observers filed in including the former mayor who picked bowser for his vacant council seat after he became mayor in 2007. >> i think bowser is going to do a great job picking up where the great administration left off and the graytration did a great job picking up where he left off. >> and vincent gray embraced at one point by the lie

d.c. hotel sting. what police say he did. developing right off the top, when you open the paper, metro takes out a full page ad to apologize for monday's deadly accident. good evening, everyone. i'm erica gonzalez in for chris lawrence. news has been breaking all day on that deadly metro evacuation. the mayor released the city report on the accident. in it the city says the first responder trying to reach the smoke-filled train and said radio communication was "nonexistent. off of the high voltage third rail. first responders were concerned about the soupd of trains on nearby tracks. a short time ago we got this. metro is taking out that full page ad in the washington post to apologize to all riders and specifically to the family of the woman killed. derek ward kicks off our team coverage at the plaza station. >> despite the relative speed with which we are getting information about this it was still a meticulous process. today we are hearing the information that was posted by d.c.'s mayor

d.c. mayor muriel bowser has begun her first week on the job. among her first moves -- opening a satellite mayor's office in ward eight. that community is one of the city's poorest and the mayor also moved her office to the third floor of the wilson building. her predecessor vincent gray worked on the sixth floor. that will put her closer to staff members and other city officers. a memorial took place today for hari simran. searchers found his body late last week. the yoga instructor disappeared during the hike. investigators believe he died in a fall. simran's family says it plans to create a foundation in his honor. a critical decision in florida. a judge rules a ban on the same sex marriage is unconstitutional. how marriage ceremonies were able to start immediately. next. and major delays this evening for a commu >> same sex marriage has become legal in florida at midnight tonight. but due to a judge's ruling today, couples in miami are already tying the knot. seeing no reason why same sex couples have to wait the judge issued her ruling and

two d.c. fire department workers on leave after alledgedly stealing thousands of dollars worth of gas for their personal cars. a 45-year-old woman apparently used her go. issued credit card to charge more than $11,000 in gas. she mostly filled up at a pair of gas stations on pennsylvania avenue not far from her home in southeast. the second employee, a 322-year-old man, is accused of making off with about $2600 in gas. investigators tell the iteam that man also sold some of that gas for 50 cents on the dollar. >>> new this morning, more one-on-one time coming to your child's classroom in loudoun county. the school board approved a new budget. it restores summer school and reduces the average class size, high school class size, by one student. the board also approved $3 million to hire 40 more teachers. in addition to the new hire, all employees would be getting on average a 2.5% pay raise. the budget gois to the board of supervisors next. >>> we all know there is a population boom going on rig
