here's damian trujillo. >> reporter: the mural is on a vacant building on south first street in the heart of the washington district. the neighbors tell me the property owner told them he needs to remodel the place before high-tech workers arrive and that the mural has to go before then. the wall is adorned with the images of caesar chavez and a revolutionary leader. it was created at a time when gang violence was spiking in the washington district. >> since that mural went up, the problems went away. >> reporter: also on it is brenda lopez who taught children dance. >> she was a great role model to a lot of the kids in the community. that's why it's so important to the family and the community. >> reporter: but the neighbors have been advised that they plan to remodel the building and part of it means repainting over the mural. the president of the association says in a zoom meeting with the owner, jason lee, he said the mural might not be appropriate for the new tenants. >> he thought some of the art was, it looked like that could be related to gangs. >> reporter: we also reached out to

damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >>> was it a targeted attack? tonight oakland police are saying very little about yesterday's shootout involving a retired police captain. retired captain ersie joyner remains in stable condition and is recovering from emergency surgery after being shot multiple times. here's the surveillance video from the west oakland chevron station. it shows the trio of suspects ambushing joyner. you see joyner in the white shirt and black vest. when one of the men tries to search through his car, the former officer draws a gun and shoots two of the men, killing one of them. east bay faith leader, pastor mike mcbride, worked with joyner for years when joyner led the cease-fire program. that program aimed to prevent homicides and other gun violence by engaging directly with gang members. >> we need to end this trend of robberies that are escalating to violent conflicts that end in people's lives being lost. >> the alameda county coroner's bureau has yet to release the name of the person who was shot and killed by joyner. no wor

nbc bay area's damian trujillo reports from quinnby oaks middle school in san jose. >> reporter: beginning next week the district will start offering flu vaccines and covid vaccines to students, family members and any community member who might want it. for now it's about getting as many students as possible tested. her mom wants to make sure angelique isn't carrying the coronavirus so she brought in the second grader to get a test at the middle school. >> my daughter was exposed in one of her activities after school, and i just want to make sure that she was safe to go back to school. >> reporter: thetudents covid tests for a couple of weeks now. parents have to opt in to get the weekly test. >> i decided to get tested because i just want to know whether i have covid or not just to keep myself safe and others safe. >> reporter: now students can get tested immediately free of charge and have results within an hour. before those students would have to quarantine at home for a few days until they could find a test, take a test and provide the results. >> the measures that we're taking are ve
