"today in the bay's" damian trujillo live in san jose near the hear of hillsdale. damian, the driver is under arrest but how are the victims? >> reporter: the victims should be okay at this hour, laura. actually police cleared the scene about an hour and a half ago. it happened here just after 2:00 this morning. we're along the capital expressway auto mall in south san jose in front of the nissan dealership here in this part of town. the victims' car was mangled when police responded to the call that came in as a single car accident. there was an uber and lyft sticker on the window of the car but police say it's hard to say right now if the driver was actually carrying a fare or if he was simply driving with family members in the car. they told police a car hit them and took off. officers were able to track the hit and run driver to nearby carson elementary. he will also be tested for drugs and alcohol to see if they may have been contributed to the crash. the official cause of the crash is still under investigation. >> so the vehicle left the scene and drove a mile

nbc bay area's damian trujillo has been following this. the charges keep piling up. >> reporter: yeah, laura. robert farmer has not posted bail since his arrest last october. because of the new charges against him today, the judge nearly doubled that bail. investigators say this is robert farmer, caught on surveillance cameras last year trying to round up one of his alleged victims. they say the cats were sometimes mutilated and abused. when police arrested him, they say there was a dead cat in his car. it all happened last year in san jose's camryian park neighborhood. >> today prosecutors added 11 felony counts to the ten farmer was already facing. the new charges stem from missing cats and dna of those cats allegedly found in farmer's car and clothing. the prosecutor called it the jane doe approach. where a body has not been found, the dna linked to a missing person presumed dead. >> i filed a second felony amendmented complaint added 11 counts for 11 additional victims we identified through dna analysis. >> reporter: cat lovers and ani

the number of charred homes at this point now stands at 34. >> "today in the bay's" damian trujillo liven salinas this morning. this fire is raging out of control, damian. >> it is. good morning. crews are just waking up this morning and ready for this shift here at base camp for today. it's going to be another long and hot and tiresome day up for them in fighting the soberanes fire down south of carmel in monterrey county. at this point we do have the one fatality of the dozer operator from the other day. the last report from cal fire has the containment still at 10%. the fire remains in tough terrain, difficult area to access. sometimes crews have to hike for three miles just to be able to get to the incident. and that has cal fire concerned mainly about fatigue, especially with the heat. so they are keeping a close eye on the crews out here. total response was about 3,000 firefighters, but 500 more arrived recently. many of them from the bay area. so far, 34 homes have been destroyed along with ten out buildings. some of the victims who lost everything are staying at carmel middle sch

"today in the bay" damian trujillo is live at the scene. what's the hold up here?it's hard to tell what took them so long to cap this leak. they're still making repairs here. they did open the westbound lanes of alum rock avenue about half hour ago. but the eastbound lanes still remain closed here on the east side of the san jose. lots of headaches for the local merchants and residents here. fire crews were on stand by. no one was evacuated but nearby apartment complexes were ordered to shelter in place and that lasted most of the afternoon and night last night. the alum rock avenue exit off of northbound highway 680 also remains closed right now. the chp is estimating they will reopen the off-ramp at 7:00 a.m. pg&e tells us this morning cruises have stopped the flow of gas but they will remain here throughout the morning to make repairs. the other concern overnight was a demographics of the people who live near the gas leak. >> out here there is two apartment -- two senior living complexes and one apartment complex. they are effected if we're telling them to shelt
