damian trujillo is live at police headquarters in san jose with a look at those numbers. damian. >> reporter: good morning. those numbers are not what this department expected. however, the brass is not hiding behind those numbers. they know more needs to be done. the latest numbers show violent crimes in san jose increased last year by 6%. that's over 2017. that's not what they wanted to hear. the number is coupled with a projected 17% increase in burglaries. the police chief has said staffing remains a big part of the problem. more officers are retiring. while academies are robust, the department is still 300 officers short of where it wants to be. and that's still less than the national average per capita. oakland, however, is trending in the other direction. violent crime is down in oakland. here are their numbers. robberies are down 1%. rapes are down 12%. residential burglaries dropped by 20%. and car burglaries fell by 25%. even homicides dropped from 71 to 68 last year. the good news -- the news is so good, oakland city leaders will have a news conference today to

damian trujillo joins us with the inside story. damian? >> reporter: raj, they are stunned here at the county government center in san jose. they are afraid that this move by the attorney general's office might force these hospitals to close. more than 58,000 people live in gilroy ray lone and this is where many come for medical care, st. louise regional hospital but it's going bankrupt and after a county judge agreed to let the county buy it, the deal appears now to be falling through. they say the medical facilities owned by bearity corporation might be left with no other options. >> i can't imagine they would be able to keep the hospitals open because we're the only bid sneer and the nearest hospital is roughly 20 miles away. >> i think the sale should go through. we definitely need a hospital out here. the area is growing more and more. >> reporter: in a statement to nbc bay area, the attorney general's office said, quote, the california department of justice is committed to advocating for conditions that ensure communities have access
