nbc bay area's damian trujillo is outside the home with a look damian? >> reporter: well, garvin, firefighters just left the scene about five minutes ago. they returnedthe windows and do complex here. the smoke alarm alerted folks inside to get out. tonight investigators want to know if fireworks are to blame. >>> flames shot through the roof of the home on 5th street near julian. the people who live here gathered outside as crews bat lds the fire. >> first my mom noticed the alarm, then she woke me up. all of a sudden we saw the smoke. right away we got out. >> reporter: the smoke was so thick it also apparently affected the neighbors next door. >> our alarm was actually going off in our house, yes. our smoke alarm was going off. we panicked and ran outside. >> reporter: on the sidewalk in front we found the remnants of several fireworks. this brand says it shoots flaming balls into the air. firefighters at the scene said they are looking at the possibility fireworks sparked this morning's fire. >> there was a lot, pretty much just at new year's, though

damian trujillo: hello, we "comunidad del valle" with damian trujillo. damian: we begin today wi t it's out of the east bay, but it's helping folks all over the bay area and across the country. felix flores is the executive director, and mwapagha mkonu is also with the imentor program. welcome to the show. mwapagha mkonu: thanks for having us. damian: i hope i didn't butcher your name. mwapagha: no, you did a great job. damian: so, tell us about the imentor program, its purpose, who you're helping, and how successful-- felix flores: yeah, we're a national nonprofit to help students who are excited to be the first in their family to go to college by partnering them with professionals and college graduates to help them reach their ambitions. and so, the organization's been around for about 20 years, first in new york and then chicago, and most recently we opened up here in the bay three years ago. damian: so, i've been a mentor, but before that i was a mentee as well. and there is an intimidation factor because if you're coming from, like myself, coming fr

damian trujillo is live in the downtown area which is flooded with fans. >> reporter: full from what i have seen so far. now, here in downtown san jose it has been a rec area that is popular from fans from clemson and alabama to have something to eat. the businesses here say they made out. everywhere you looked, there was a sea of red, and a lot of orange. but business owners say the colors they saw was green. a lot of it. >> it was pretty good. much better than when we had the super bowl. >> the tide has rolled in and so have the tigers and nice to have the southerners here enjoying our left coast hospitality. >> reporter: the head of the downtown association believe the numbers at the game and on the streets of san jose might have been bigger if notre dame was in sound. clemson and alabama still proved to be a good draw for the south bay even with the weekend rain. >> the hospitality has been fantastic. people are nice. san jose is a beautiful city. >> other than the weather, it has been great. >> reporter: we spoke with agree their perception of the city might change if their team

we are in gilroy, damian trujillo nbc bay area news. >>> crime is dropping in the city. announcing today that homicides shootings, and property crimes decreased last year compared to 2017. homicide down 18% last year. nonfatal shootings dropped 30%. property crime down 17%. >>> remember all the noise and dust and traffic and disruption as b.a.r.t. expanded to berryessa neighborhood, downtown san jose is bracing for the same. major construction doesn't start for another two years. some preliminary work needs to be done. the impact could shrink streets to one lane. parking spaces and sidewalks could be cut off. the drilling will be as noisy as a lawn mower. >>> google's next big thing is helpful. ability to use a phone is something most of us takes for granted. for people who couldn't use one, google comes to the rescue. >> reporter: google with a piece of technology, you will see them building is helping people with disabilities access the internet. google hosted what it called a build athon at its headquarters and you could say they are building a new way to search. >> v

damian trujillo joins us from downtown with some of the details. how much are we talking about here? >> reporter: it depends on the restaurant. some restaurants have added that surcharge, others have raised their prices. they say it's the cost of doing business in san jose. it's just before the lunch hour at chachos restaurant. >> the reason why it's going up is the increase in minimum wage. >> reporter: the minimum wage went up $3 in the past year and he felt compelled to raise prices. at ike's sandwich shop, the surcharge is optional. there was talk of implementing a surcharge. >> many ares to pay an extra 50 cents for their burger to ensure people who work here can afford to have a place to live and not live on the street. >> reporter: chachos wants their employees to eastern a living w but say they need to ask customers for help. the highest, not necessarily every is at $15.69, the highest in the state. damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >>> a san jose high school teacher is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student. the t

live in san jose, damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >> thank you. we want to take you back live to washington, d.c. where nancy pelosi just picked up the gavel for the first time. in case you missed it the 115th session of the congress started two hours ago. nancy pelosi is making history being the speaker of the house once again. democrats are taking control following last year's mid-term elections. >> well, new for you at 11:00, prosecutors in florida are not going to pursue domestic violence charges against nfl player rubin foster. it's been more than a month of this. no word on why charges are being dismissed. foster was arrested at a tampa hotel in november following an incident involving a player -- involving the player and the companion who police have identified as the same woman who accused foster of hitting her back in february. a woman recanted the earlier accusations. >> right now a manhunt is under way in oakland for a drier who hit a 14-year-old boy while he was riding his bike. it happened yesterday afternoon near the fruitvale b.a.r.

damian trujillo is live at police headquarters in san jose with a look at those numbers. damian. >> reporter: good morning. those numbers are not what this department expected. however, the brass is not hiding behind those numbers. they know more needs to be done. the latest numbers show violent crimes in san jose increased last year by 6%. that's over 2017. that's not what they wanted to hear. the number is coupled with a projected 17% increase in burglaries. the police chief has said staffing remains a big part of the problem. more officers are retiring. while academies are robust, the department is still 300 officers short of where it wants to be. and that's still less than the national average per capita. oakland, however, is trending in the other direction. violent crime is down in oakland. here are their numbers. robberies are down 1%. rapes are down 12%. residential burglaries dropped by 20%. and car burglaries fell by 25%. even homicides dropped from 71 to 68 last year. the good news -- the news is so good, oakland city leaders will have a news conference today to

damian trujillo joins us with the inside story. damian? >> reporter: raj, they are stunned here at the county government center in san jose. they are afraid that this move by the attorney general's office might force these hospitals to close. more than 58,000 people live in gilroy ray lone and this is where many come for medical care, st. louise regional hospital but it's going bankrupt and after a county judge agreed to let the county buy it, the deal appears now to be falling through. they say the medical facilities owned by bearity corporation might be left with no other options. >> i can't imagine they would be able to keep the hospitals open because we're the only bid sneer and the nearest hospital is roughly 20 miles away. >> i think the sale should go through. we definitely need a hospital out here. the area is growing more and more. >> reporter: in a statement to nbc bay area, the attorney general's office said, quote, the california department of justice is committed to advocating for conditions that ensure communities have access
