good evening i'm dan ashley a. fire broke out under note a car of a pittsburgh train as it was picking up and dropping off passengers at the bart station platform just after 6:00 tonight. video sent into the abc 7 newsroom but our viewers shows all the smoke it put up at the height of the evening commute. sky 7 hd was overhead after passengers on the ten-car train were forced to evacuate. the platform was closed quickly. alisha troft said it may have started on in a conductor box under the train. passengers smelled the smoke for miles before it pulled into the station. >> we smelled smoke in oakland but thought it was breaks. when we stopped, someone who exited said there was a fire and everyone rushed out. >> reporter: a. >> this means lengthy delays. they are single tracking because the train that caught on fire is still on one of the tracks. no one was injured during all of this and we'll bring you any developments here on abc 7 news and on twitter at abc 7 news bay area. >>> the national transportation safety b

. >> i'm dan ashley. abc7 news south bay reporter lisa amin gulezian is live with a look at the immediate and long-term impact of the shutdown in the south bay. lisa? >> dan, people started leaving the federal building behind me at about noon. that's when they got their furlough notices. activity will continue tomorrow and all week in that far building over there. that's where the courts are. the majority of people who were furloughed work right over there. the furloughs are in full affect . at san jose's federal building, the courts are still open, but it doesn't mean things are running smoothly. >> i feel bad for the staff. i am an administrative law judge so i am holding hearings, but don't have staff to support me. >> those working in nonessential apartments telling them to go home. the signs went up and the websites were changed. in menlo park at the u.s. geological survey parking lots are empty. only a handful of people researching volcanic activity are still on site. >> we were told to come back fro

i'm dan ashley. >> i'm carolyn johnson. abc7 news reporter nick smith is live in antioch on larkspur drive with the late breaking details. nick? >> dan and carolyn, this remains a crime scene. we are here on the 2700 block of larkspur drive. we understand a man was walking his dog in this block, two dogs actually when he was attacked by two dogs who charged at him from an open area. in the midst of the screens and the calls for help, neighbors responded to all of the commotion. those dogs turned and attacked at least three other people. all of the victims suffered bites to their extremities, arms, legs and face. residents in the quiet neighborhood were frightened by the screams. >> i saw cars everywhere honking and people screaming. there was a bunch of cop cars out here and i was scared. i heard gunshots and i ran inside. i was really scared. >> when officers arrived on the scene the dogs urn ited from the people they were attacking and charged at the officers. the officers fired four shots killing one of those dogs here at

i'm dan ashley. carolyn johnson is off tonight. the ntsb plans to shutdown the track between pleasant hill and lafayette bart stations tomorrow from noon until 3:30. officials hillary enact what happened -- will reenact what happened leading up to the accident. john alston is live in walnut creek where a memorial is growing. >> this is the area where the two men were killed. tomorrow the ntsb will be running trains along this track and trying to reconstruct what happened. today they released some new information. the ntsb says the crash happened while bart was training workers to pick up passengers during the strike. bart claimed it was a routine maintenance run. >> there were two individuals being trained on the day of the accident. each trainee spent time in the operator seat for such training under the direct supervision of an experienced trainer. >> a horn was sounded before impact and the flat spots on the rear wheel suggest the emergency brakes were activated before impact. data, awed -- audio and video are being analyzed. th

i'm dan ashley. carolyn johnson is off tonight. there is no end in sight sorry to say as bart and the own yens continue -- and the unions continue to argue. a lot of frustrated commuters. >> a lot of them hopefully aring paing lots of patience even though the traffic is backed up on the freeways heading to the bay bridge. the good news is that right now traffic on surface streets in the city has eased up a bit at least in the last couple hours. but on this first day of bart's fall strike, there was that such thing as rush hour. there were several hours of traffic gridlock. this was a line of cars waiting to get to the bay bridge at 8:00. it was a crawl through city streets. >> it takes me about 35 minutes. >> literally two miles from here. >> how long did it take you? >> about 45 to an hour. >> to avoid the traffic back up lots of people tried getting out of the city early. with no bart trains running the afternoon commute turned into an evening odyssey. >> i can see it going over the bridge. >> for the casual carpoolers the traffi
