joining me now is michigan congressman and chief deputy whip for the house democratic caulk dan kildeeng members of the house ways and means committee. thank you so much for taking the time this morning. >> thanks, jim, it is good to be on. >> so there are differences within the democratic caucus. is this a part of the negotiation or talks at an impasse? >> well i won't say it is in the an impasse. because we're moving forward with the legislation in the house. but as you know there is a process between the house and the senate and we may not be of all of one mind. so long as what we do is significant. and it helps reconcile some of the big inequities in our site by making sure that we have access to good paying union jobs and tax cuts for families, lower prescription drugs an pay for it by making sure that the largest corporations and wealthiest individuals pay their fair share. it may scale up and down based on what the senate is willing to do but that is the direction we're going in. >> are you, and your colleagues, willing to accept a final bill at a lower price tag than $3.5 trill

joining me now, dan kildee.ts on the budget and ways and means committees. good to see you. how you? >> i'm doing great, chris. thanks. >> talk to me about how you see where we are right now, congressman. because it's -- i keep using the word daunting this hour. but there is so much going on. there's clearly a split between moderates and more progressives in congress. what can and should the president do today when he meets with some of the members of the caucus to get this thing moving in a direction that gets it done? >> i think the message has to be really clear, doing nothing, not an option. and of course, defaulting on our bills, no way is that an option. we have to keep the government open. the hope i have is that this conversation can be focused on finding the boldest common denominator among democrats. clearly, republicans have taken themselves out of the conversation in the sense that they don't want to do anything at all. they want this administration to fail even if the country goes into a recession.
