cnn's dan simon still there, dan, a long day of reporting what is the latest? >> well, hey, john, i think sometimes we in the media can be guilty of over using phrase it could have been a lot worse. but in this particular case, i don't know how there's any other way to say it. i mean, you look at that wreckage and the fact that all the people walked away, you know, what more can you say? two people confirmed dead, according to the south korean transport ministry, the two people who died were both chinese passport holders. and according to san francisco fire officials, they were found on the runway, which begs the question, were they ejected when the plane hit the ground or were they somehow able to evacuate and gave in to injuries. at this point, we do not know the answer to this question. we have been talking about the injured all afternoon long and all evening long. we know that nine bay area hospitals have taken in the injured. 49 people said to be in serious condition. if you look around where i am here at the international terminal, you can see, that here

to cnn's dan simon first, who is in san francisco with the very latest. dan, what are you hearing there from san francisco, in san francisco? >> well, hey, don, i'm actually in the international terminal at the airport. we just had the very first briefing from officials here at the airport. they really couldn't provide a whole lot of information. they basically confirmed what we already know at this point. they tell us that they're going to be having press conferences every hour, so we should expect to have another one at about 6:00 eastern time. in the meantime, as you can imagine, it's jam-packed here in the terminal as all traffic, airline traffic, coming in and out of the airport has come to a complete stop. passengers, of course, have a lot of questions. they want to know when they can sort of get on their way and, of course, everyone is wondering what exactly happened with this crash. the official couldn't provide us any information in terms of how it happened or how many people were on board. he did say that there is a process that they're following

dan simon joins us live from the airport. what is the latest there. dan. >> reporter: hi, fredericka. it's been a little more than 24 hours since this crash happened and the investigation appears to be well under way. investigators have been out to that scene trying to figure out any type of clue to determine what may have heaped here. we know, as you reported, the flight data record have been sent to washington and appear to be in good shape. hopefully data is currently being extracted from the recorders. at this point, nothing has been ruled out including pilot error. we know the ceo of the airlines say it appears there was no mechanical issue or problem with the engine either. survivors and witnesses say it appears the 7-year-old aircraft was flying too low as it approached the runway and the tail hit the sea way before it spun out of the control. the tail was detached from the airplane along with destabilizers. technology called ils helps tell pilots where the runway is, it wasn't operating at the time of the crash and not sure if that played a rol

dan simon is in los angeles. how many folks turned out there, dan? >> reporter: well, you definitely have several hundred people here, still a few dozen folks behind me. i would certainly also echo what nick and alena said in terms of the messages coming out. we heard the same kinds of things here in los angeles. as one speaker put it, trayvon fell, but we rose up. i want you to listen now to how one activist expressed his outrage in the way this case has evolved. take a look. >> there are those who are trying to say that the killing of trayvon martin, a young black man with a hoodie, is not about racism. there are those that are trying to say that the profiling and the targeting by george zimmerman is not about racism. there are those who are trying to say that the verdict of freeing a killer of trayvon martin is not about race, that the jury followed the law. to those who say it's not about race, we say that we're living in a system of racism! >> reporter: this lasted for about an hour and a half. organizers and activists had come here to the feder

straight to cnn's dan simon at san francisco international airport. an ntsb update gave us plenty of new information last hour, dan. what new information are we learning now? >> we got a lot of new information and we want to be precise in terms of how we talk about it. the bottom line is is that crew knew there was going to be a lot of trouble just seconds before the crash. crews were able to get all this information from the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder. let's talk about some of the highlights. we know seven seconds before the crash there was a call for an increase in speed, which means that the pilot knew that the aircraft was not going fast enough to make a successful landing. six seconds before the impact, they had what you call a stick shaker, which means the aircraft was in danger of stalling. if the aircraft stalls, you don't get any lift and you're really going to have an enormous problem. 1 1/2 seconds before impact, the pilot calls to initiate, quote, a go around. what that means is they knew there was going to be troub

dan simon is there. dan, protests earlier in the week in los angeles turned violent. how are things different today? >> reporter: well, fredricka, i can echo what all of my cnn colleagues said in all of the various cities in terms of the messages coming out as one speaker just said, trayvon went down, but we rose up. i want to introduce you to one person who's out here today, sort of indicative of the sentiments that we're hearing here. this is phyllis groom from the east coast. you looked online to see where a protest might be occurring in los angeles. explain why you felt so strongly about being out here today. >> well i felt it important to the support the martin family, but also to show solidarity with all of those folks who vk social injustice in this country. a most importantly, to come out and express my views that black -- not just black men and women -- i'm sorry -- are at rick, but the lives of all young men and women are at risk and it's important that i think that that be highlighted. >> reporter: what stands out in terms of what some of the speakers have

dan simon at san francisco international airport. ntsb has given us plenty of new information. dan, walk us through what the chairman of the ntsb said. >> reporter: want to point out we just got new images from the ntsb of the crash scene. i'll ask our control room to show some of the photos as i relay some of the information from the briefing. if one of these pictures sticks out in any way, feel free to interrupt me. i'll tell what you was relayed. a lot of information has been gleaned from both the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder. the bottom line here is that flight crew knew there were some serious issues in the seconds from impact. seven seconds before the impact, they called for an increase in speed. they knew there was not enough speed to make a successful landing. six seconds before the impact, they have what you call a stick shaker meaning the plane was about to stall there may not have been enough lift which would suggest big-time trouble. 1 1/2 seconds before impact they call for the landing to be aborted so they wanted to go up into the air, circle

correspondent dan simon is en route to san francisco international airport and dan, what are you hearing about this what appears to be using richard's words, not mine, he's more of an authority on this than i am but this crash landing of this flight 214 from seoul, south korea. >> reporter: fred i hate to speculate. when we get there we'll talk to as many witnesses as possible. i can tell you this is generally an airport that has overcast weather and when that happens, traffic really slows down a lot. they reduce the traffic to just one runway normally you have four runways that are operational. i don't know what the weather was like at the time, genally you experience a lot of overcast weather at san francisco international airport. it is the largest airport in the bay area. you have several airports and it's just a tremendous shock. i travel out of that airport almost every week. obviously without incident. they do a great job there and they have great efficiency at the airport as aerpts go and it's a huge tragedy. >> it certainly is. dan you mentioned, we have some sater in the weathe

dan simon is in los angeles. dan, one of the 100 cities that are likely to have protests or scheduled protests this weekend. what is the mood there? it's very early there right now, but is there already a turnout? >> reporter: well, just a handful of people at this point, fredricka, and organizers to be honest, they don't really know how many people are going to show up. they are hopeful that they'll get maybe a few hundred protesters, but the key here in los angeles and this holds true for all the other cities is officials believe this will be a very peaceful demonstration. they've been working very closely with the los angeles police department in terms of closing some of the nearby roads, and they say this is going to be very peaceful. this is in front of the federal courthouse in los angeles. i'm told there will be a vigil and a handful of selected speakers, and there could be a couple of celebrities on hand as well. we're going to be monitoring things here in los angeles and we'll bring you live updates as th

with us from san francisco is our correspondent dan simon. dan, are you like me, because when i saw the pictures i thought how did so many people survive? >> absolutely, brook. these photos certainly caught our eye when they were posted on the internet by unknown photographer, and we don't know who took the pictures, but they are dramatic. the most dramatic is seeing the picture of the rear of the aircraft and basically a charred mess. you are also seeing pictures from the front of the plane where you can see that the seats basically were disjarred or jarred from, you know, the foundation on that fuselage, and then the dramatic picture of the fuselage being hoisted by the crane and ultimately taken to the airport hangar and just amazing stuff, brook. >> and as we continue to look at the pictures and are amazed, we learned last friday, dan, one of the three victims one of the girls 16 years of age from china turns out she was killed by one of the fire engines that was rushing to the scene, and we are learning today that her death could have bee

dan simon is standing by. what's the latest, dan?lf, sadly we just found out that a third victim has in fact died as a result of this plane crash. this is a girl, she's said to be a minor. she was pronounced dead earlier today. she had been at san francisco general hospital since the time of the crash. she had had critical injuries and unfortunately she is dead. that brings us now to three victims who died. we also know that one of the girls, one of the chinese girls who also died in this crash was in fact run over by an emergency vehicle. authorities confirming that today. it's not clear if that's what caused her death or she died as a result of the crash. the coroners still need to make a determination. meantime, wolf, we can tell you that the area on 28 runway left where the crash occurred here at san francisco international airport has been entirely cleaned up. we just took a tour of that area. the fuselage has been removed. san francisco authorities tell us that runway could be open as early as tonight so operations resuming bac

dan simon is in san francisco right now. he's following the investigation. dan, what's the latest? going far below the recommended speed as it approached the runway. we also heard from some of the first responders today who really did some incredible things. but what you might call some uncomfortable questions about something that may have happened as they raced to the scene. as investigators continue to examine the wreckage, more evidence surfaced today that asiana flight 214 was flying too low and too slow to make a safe landing. >> about three seconds prior to impact, the flight data recorder recorded its lowest speed of 103 knots. >> reporter: the plane had a target speed for landing of 137 knots, or about 40 miles an hour faster before touchdown. >> look at that one. >> look at his nose up in the air. oh, my god. it's an accident. >> reporter: investigators still aren't saying whether they believe pilot error led to the crash, but deborah hersman made it clear their decisions are being closely reviewed. >> we're looking for things that might affect human performance like fatig

in the meantime, we want to go to cnn's dan simon. he was at the airport yesterday shortly after this happened and, dan, that video really shows what happened. i'm sure it will be a tool investigators will use, invaluable to investigators, trying to figure out what caused this crash. >> reporter: no question about it. i can tell you where fred hayes was. he was at a place called bayside park where save yags enthusiasts go and like to watch the planes take off and land here at the airport. this was right near the runway so here's fred hayes watching these planes. he's there with his wife and pulls out a cell phone or another camera and he is just rolling and happens to capture these very dramatic images. you can hear in the tone of his voice that he was quite surprised to see that occur. he knew instantly that there was an issue and if you take a look at that video, don, it totally matches up with what we have been hearing from the survivors and the witnesses. you see the plane come in low. you see that tail hit what appears to be the s

dan simon is at the san francisco airport. we're learning more and more about the pilot had only 43 hours of experience on this plane. do we believe the investigators think this lack of experience flying this particular aircraft had something to do with the crash? >> reporter: the bottom line is we don't know. one would think based upon what we have seen from the data recorders is they will be looking at pilot error very closely. let me tell you about this press conference. we'll be hearing from first responders, police officers and firefighters who responded to that scene in the minutes after this crash occurred. by all accounts they we are formed heroically rescuing these victims, but there's something uncomfortable that they my discuss. there's some speculation that one of the firefighters emergency vehicles may have run over one of the victims, one of the two teenage girls who died. we're learning that they were alerted by the fire department that one of the vehicles may have run over this girl. questions such oz this will

for more on this and other details i want to bring in dan simon. pilot experience is one part of the investigation. how rare is it that you have one guy being trained for the first time landing in san francisco with that particular plane and then the other guy first time in the instructor role? >> reporter: the bottom line is here all the issues surrounding the pilots level of experience is going to be extremely critical to this case. were they communicating properly in the cockpit. another main focus seems to be on the automated flight equipment used to control the plane's speed. was it functioning properly. did the two pilots talk about it. all that will will be extremely critical and may determine what happened here. >> they didn't take blood samples after the crash. is that typical? do we know why that didn't happen? >> reporter: we know what the ntsb chairwoman said that it would have happened had they been u.s. based pilots. the agency is checking to see what the requirements are for foreign based carriers. some transportation officials say t

dan simon has been watching and monitoring. he's been covering this from the very beginning. pilots on that plane, dan. there were three in the cockpit. one a relief pilot was way in the back part of the plane but the two pilots in control, one had a lot of experience flying a 777, landing many times in san francisco. the other one, very limited experience. had never done it before. and we now know what happened. >> reporter: and those two people had never been teamed up before. they were in that plane together for the very first time. and that pilot had less experience than we previously thought. he had only 35 hours experience flying that plane. we were originally led to believe he had 40 hours flying that plane. whether or not that makes a difference, we don't know. but the bottom line is these were two people who had never flown together before. and obviously what the ntsb is trying to figure out is if they made some bad decisions. that's really the focus here. what was going on inside that cockpit. another thing that was interesting is that during the interviews with one
