complete coverage by dana griffin in altadena and our contessa brewer with the staggering costs. dana. >> reporter: good morning, frank. five people have been confirmed dead, but the medical examiner received ten reports of fatalities. they are working to get to the locations, but because of the safety concerns, they have not been able to respond to the deaths. out here in altadena, we notice a stronger law enforcement presence. we see more black and white patrol vehicles. they have the red and blue lights on. there are several check points down this road. you can see them off there into the distance. we got stopped several times even coming here. usually they check media i.d., but they are being particular for crews working to put out gas lines. overnight, the california national guard did deploy to the fire zones and many at corners like this. some in the vehicle. you have many standing guard trying to prevent people from entering these evacuation zones. that was a major issue yesterday. we saw several people just walking in. they couldn't drive in, but they walked in. you could

dana griffin in the los angeles area. ank you. >> while these fires rage on in southern california, it's the opposite problem across the south. major storm bringing heavy snow and ice to a region not used to it. nbc's kathy park is in nashville this morning. kathy, how is the snow looking there? >> reporter: laura, good morning to you. as you can see, we got plenty of snow and many will be digging out this weekend. we got close to 6 inches of snow and at one point, the snowfall rate was close to 1 inch per hour. arkansas saw some of the biggest snow totals, in fact, recording more than a foot in some locations. meanwhile, ahead of the massive storm, tennessee, carolinas, georgia declaring a state of emergency to activate more resources to tackle snow, sleet and freezing rain. this win try weather made a mes on the roadways, drivers slipping and sliding with the icy conditions. at one point in kansas, a truck's windshield shattered when icy debris flew off a passing car. many flights were canceled or delayed and operations

nbc news correspondent dana griffin is joining us from al alta dena, california >> reporter: frank, goodning to you that's right this is one of the most destructive wildfires anyone has seen in this county. you talk to people -- people who covered fires or firefighters who battled fires like this, they say they never have seen anything like this i'll walk you through some of the images we are in altadena neighborhood where the fire came through with the vehicles are to their shell. the s carried in the winds. we stepped on something, that was the pop you heard. the embers hop scotched through the neighborhood you have some vehicles torched like this one, but further down the road, you have some vehicles untouched. we actually hear a cat stuck in one of the ehicles this jeep. th under the hood trying to get the cat out. he appears to be hurt. we will try to get to him after this hit this paints the picture of what the entire neighborhood looks like these flames you see are from gas lines that appear to be on because they're like torches you see this at almost every house on this block. yo

joining us now nbc news correspondent dana griffin is in altadena. g with people in the community as they return. what are some of the stories you are hearing? >> reporter: oh, my gosh. zinhle, it's heartbreaking. a lot of people have minutes to get out. you didn't realize how close the flames were. i will walk to with you here so you can see the devastation behind us. a lot of homes in the community look just like this. i spoke with a captain of the los angeles fire department. he was home. he did not think that things would get this worse. he said when he started smelling smoke he knew that was an indication he needed to pack things up. and he actually watched his home burn from afar. listen as he returned to try to sift through the rubble and listen to part of our conversation. >> i think i am still going through the mode, what can i find. the fire service, that's what we do. we try to fix problems. so, that's what i am doing now. thankful to dpod my wife and pets and children are good. >> reporter: so captain al hugo grateful his family and pets s

that was dana griffin reporting. since the palisadess fir broke out, we have heard about hydrants running dry, leaving fire crews helpless to douse the flames. we spoke to one man who spent the night protecting his home. he says his family used water bottles and water from the toilet to try to save their home. after the water stopped running in their neighborhood. i mean, they cut the water off on us, so not only did they not send any relief, they took the resources away from me to protect my neighbors and myself. and that family says they think the majority of their home is still standing, but they have not been able to go back to check it. governor gavin newsom calling for an investigation into the water supply in la. whatever problems that might probe that probe might find our own investigative reporter jon van derbeken tells us. many experts say the system was never designed to deliver enough water that fast to fight so many fires at once. hey. he doesn't have any water. this san francisco fire crew knows firstha

joining us now, live from altadena, nbc news correspondent dana griffin. we talked to you yesterday morning, we saw what you were experiencing and seeing there. what is the latest now this morning? >> reporter: yeah, well, ali, i can tell you there is a noticeably different response when it comes to keeping people out of the fire destruction zone. you can see we have got several black and white patrol vehicles lined up and down this road and we'll walk over so you can see a little bit more of the atmosphere, you can see the red and blue flashing lights all the way down in the distance. and also the california national guard has been deployed here. you can see this hummer here, we have several at different intersections. and they even have yellow tape lined up and down this evacuation zone. something we did not see yesterday. we saw several people able to go into the neighborhoods, and it is just such a large disaster zone that law enforcement couldn't keep people out, so right now there is a curfew in place for these evacuation zones from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00

nbc's dana griffin is reporting from los angeles. serious do fire officials think this wind threat could be this week? >> well, it's very serious. those red flag warnings are in effect until later this afternoon, possibly this evening. and there's still a weather a fire weather watch through thursday. so although the winds are dying down compared to what we were seeing overnight, there is still a major threat out there because conditions are ripe. you've got dry conditions plus wind conditions. maybe not as powerful as those red flag warnings, but still powerful enough to spread fires. so this is video from the san diego region, where we had three new fires pop up overnight, which was a very concerning situation, because anytime you've got a wildfire in the middle of the night while evacuation orders are being issued, it's a challenge for people. some people are sleeping. also, you've got an issue for firefighters. we're seeing some ground crews here, but officials in that region say what really helped them get the lilac fire, this t

nbc's dana griffin is reporting for us. what more do we know about these, dana. yeah.this fire, this is a huge fire. this is burning about northwest of los angeles. this is in the castaic community right now. the fire, according to cal fire, is at 100 acres. but this is growing at a rapid at a rapid pace. as you mentioned, this started within the hour. and right now it's burning in a remote area, but it is threatening nearby communities. you can see that large, thick plume of gray smoke. it's also casting a really dark shadow over a nearby community. we've been listening to the local affiliate that has that chopper up right now. they've been warning people in that area to get out now, if you can. the good news in this situation is those wind gusts that we have been experiencing over the last several days, right now, about 20mph. so this is the time window for those crews as you see that helicopter going by to dump as much water on this fire as possible before those wind gusts pick back up starting this evening. and so we've been seeing crews make drops. they've been ca

nbc's dana griffin is on the ground in valencia, california. nbc meteorologist bill karins is here, and nbc's yamiche alcindor is in washington, d.c. for us. dana, this time yesterday, you reported that the hughes fire had just started, and since then it shut down i-5. now it's finally stalled, it seems, at 10,000 acres. but tell us what's the situation and what are we watching for in the hours ahead? >> yeah, chris, a much different scene out here compared to yesterday, where we saw that black and orange billowing smoke. behind us is the footprint of this fire. and you can see into the distance just how close this this fire got to homes. and even on this ridge here you can see a line of pink flame retardant that was dropped. luckily, crews made such a valiant effort to get this fire out. we are still seeing some smoke to the left of us. this is what is left of the hughes fire. again, 10,000 10,000 acres burned, 14% contained. that is a really good sign considering what we went through yesterday. you had tens of thousands of people evacuating, m

let's go back to dana griffin, reporting frommal that alaltad california. dana, we're a few hours from sunrise when we'll get a look at the destruction wrought overnight. what are you expecting in terms of the fire and a response here? >> reporter: the response is still trying to put out fires in neighborhoods like this. you just missed it, there was a fire truck that came down this road. it stopped for a second. we thought maybe it was going to come down, but there are also power lines that are down that we can walk over. you can see, these are some of the conditions which are possibly hampering those fire fighting efforts. because you've got these lines that are across the street, and you've got a light that -- a streetlight that is on the ground. you can tell that this broke. this was likely during the windstorm or possibly the fire that cut through this wooden pole. so they're still responding. the fact we're still seeing these torches, as i like to call them, almost at every single a house, like this entire neighborhood is aglow, they haven't -- usually

let's art with dana griffin in los angeles. at can you tell us about these new fires and how are officials preparing for the possibility of rain here? >> reporter: this is the hughes fire, the one that popped up within the last hour. this is northwest of los angeles. you can see that huge dark plume of smoke. you can see fire coming down this canyon in this area. this is very concerning because this fire right now is 500 acres. within an hour it's already grown that much and you can bet just looking at the images it's going to increase. there are some evacuations nearby. they're reminding people to pack up and leave now if you are seeing and smelling that dark smoke in your community. it's a good indication you may be called upon next to evacuate. there's a brush fire burning in san diego that popped up around 9:00 this morning. luckily it stayed below ten acres at the moment. it was very concerning because at one point schools had to be evacuated. we're hearing reports one person was injured. it appears that crews are getting a

joining us life is nbc news correspondent dana griffin. lk us through what you're seeing on the ground there. >> reporter: hey, ali, good morning. well, yeah, it is morning here. it's hard to keep up with time. we've been up since 11:00 last night. and drove here to altadin-a. and this is the destruction you're seeing. you talked about neighborhoods being left unrecognizable. we got several vehicles that are burned down to their shell. we're just going to walk through this neighborhood. and every home that we have driven past has been burned to the ground. and those embers that were flying when that wind storm kicked through, that's why you're seeing some vehicles still standing, some homes still standing. but others, they hopscotched and destroyed vehicles like this. we're going to walk around and show you, these are the homes that we're seeing in this neighborhood. and many of them look just like this. you can see the orange glow from these what i call gas fires. they're not -- this is not an active fire because of what happened here. but

let's start with dana griffin in los angeles. na, what can you tell us about these new fires and what conditions are like just across the region there? >> yeah, zinhle, conditions are improving, but there is still a concern out there. so these two new fires popped up overnight in san diego and that's when a lot of people are sleeping. so, obviously, a concern because some of those evacuation orders had to be issued overnight. you are seeing video of the two fires that were burning. so luckily crews attacked these fires from the air, putting out the fire. it is now 100% contained much they say they have stopped forward progression on the lilac fire. that's the one that has burned some 80 acres, and we are told that some 1,500 people have been affected by the evacuation orders. now, this is, obviously, very concerning because of the deadly fires that have been burning the last would weeks. we just had the red flag warning that expired. a lot of people are on edge. because that red flag warning has expired, there is still a fire weat

and that's where we find our colleague, dana griffin. she's been reporting out there. na, are there still any active flames over there? what are you seeing? >> hi, katy. let me walk you through where we are. i want to show you, the power pole has been split here. it is charred. you've got power lines in the middle of the roadway. you've got a streetlight that has fallen to the ground. homes on this street look just like this, katy. they are decimated. many have burned to the ground. you see flames behind be us. those are actually gas lines that have not even been shut off because that is not the priority right now. still the firefighting, still saving lives, making sure people get out if those evacuation orders continue. but you can walk through this neighborhood. it is so honest, it looks like a scene from a movie that someone staged, but this is not -- this is reality. and i think that's what is mind- boggling for a lot of people, is that this does not seem real. a lot of people did not think that this could happen in an area like los angeles county. the most populate

i want to bring in nbc's dana griffin. she is on the roof of our bureau in los angeles. big picture, dana, what is the message going out to californians from officials? steve guttenberg had one message, which is if you are effectuating and you find yourself unable to keep going, don't leave your car in the middle of the road, or, leave your keys. what else are we hearing from officials today? >> reporter: officials are saying if you are told to evacuate, do not hesitate. they have seen several -- this is the black and smoke covering the skies. it is made with cerium really dark over the last several hours. this smoke feels a little closer than it was earlier this morning. as we continue to pan across our lot, this is the universal studios lot behind us here. a lot of workers were told to stay home today. as we keep going, you can see to the west of us, this is pacific palisades area. this area we saw a lot of the smoke earlier this morning had cleared out. is white and light gray building smoke in that corner, that popped up recently. that shows there is still an active f

dana griffin is in altadena, the danger is far from over, firefighters have made big progress with the eat-in fire, what are you seeing and hearing in that community today? >> they even said there was little to no progress in both the palisades and the eat-in fire in the last 24 hours, so that's a great sign considering that we got these gusty winds and we are under the red flag warning. we are told today may be the strongest gust, especially in the mountains, so we are not out of the woods yet but we have seen an overwhelming show of support from people popping up on corners, creating these makeshift donation centers and a moment ago we were down the street a mile away when we ran into a drive-up donation center and found a early familiar face, actress eva longoria, she was dedicated to focusing on the evacuees that were coming up as she was handing them donations and we took a little minute to ask a question, let's listen. >> just trying to work and get it done and be here for the community and making sure everybody is having their urgent needs taken care of. >> now some areas here i

dana griffin is in altadena and bill joins us in studio, dana, let's start with you, what are firefighters saying about progress in containing these fires especially as the winds are picking up? >> reporter: zinhle , very good news, the eat-in fire, did not gain any additional acreage, it's 35% contained and that's a really good number. it may seem low because one hundred percent is when you have a full line around the fire which prevents it from restarting in any fashion, so they've made significant progress but we have not seen any major flames or smoke in the area, so that is a good sign, we've seen crews going door-to-door, making sure there are no hotspots inside the homes that have already burned down because when the wind comes through, they want to make sure the embers don't fly and catch homes that are still standing. >> we mentioned a search for the cause of some of these fires, it's appalling to think they might have been human caused by arson. what are investigators looking at? >> reporter: so they are looking at everything, you guys mentioned earlier that this is human caused,

meteorologist bill karins is tracking the weather conditions but let's start with correspondent dana griffin in valencia, california. dana, how are crews battling these newest fires here? >> reporter: yeah, zinhle, they're ing them from the air, from the ground, and they have done a pretty good job. behi me, this is the burn scar from the hughes fire. you can kind of see it on that hillside. this is how close it got to this community. and firefighters, as you can see, have put out all of the flames. we did see a sliver of smoke going by that was being pushed by this wind, but there's none right now. we're still feeling the wind gusts and that red flag warning is in effect until tomorrow morning. so we're not out of the woods yet. but fire crews are battling this by being predeployed across this region. they're able to get on these fires a lot quicker than we have seen in years past. that's because unfortunately, those deadly wildfires that we had two weeks ago, a lot of the crews have stayed here and just moments ago, governor gavin newsom was here getting a briefing. i spoke to one of the l

nbc's dana griffin has our sunday focus from pacific palisades. >> reporter: this morning, l.a.he ashes of precious memories. those santa ana winds once fanned the flames have finally died down helping firefighters get the upper hand. evacuation orders are slowly being lifted, allowing residents to return home. but for some like the dale family who lost their pacific palisades home, it's a long road back. >> it's just so tight-knit, and i'm desperate to get back. it's my favorite place in the world, and i want to get back there however we can. >> reporter: they're not alone. more than 12,000 homes and buildings were lost in the wildfires. california governor gavin newsom hinting at a marshal-style rebuilding plan that could cost tens of billions ofollars. >> we have a team looking at reimagining l.a. 2.0. >> reporter: that could put newsom at odds with congressional republicans who suggested putting conditions on aid to california. how to rebuild in a way to ensure this never happens again. >> the's a lot of different factors at play here. >> reporter: jeff is a climate and disa

. >> we have nbc's morgan chesky in westwood and dana griffin in brentwood there covering the devastationor us. we're going to start with dana, who's tracking the massive palisades fire. dana, where are you today and what are you seeing? >> we are in the brentwood neighborhood where the palisades fire has stretched farther east. you can see the smoke and some flames coming over this ridge. firefighters have been attacking it from the air, trying to put out those flames and prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the community. you've had several new evacuation orders issued overnight, including actor dennis quaid. right now, 11 people total in total have been confirmed dead throughout all of the wildfires in southern california. more than 100,000 people have been displaced. officials are warning of a potential red flag warning that is forecasted for next week, which could last monday through wednesday. so there is definitely a concern here. there were some rumors overnight that there may be a change in leadership when the mayor of los angeles and the los angeles fire chief met l

joining us now, nbc news correspondent dana griffin who is in los angeles, and nbc news meteorologistl karins here with us in studio. dana, what are firefighters doing right now to prepare for this new round of high wind? >> zinhle, we are in the palisades, and exactly what you see behind me is part of that effort to prevent hot spots from flaring up, once those winds kick back up, firefighters are spraying homes that are flaring up again so they won't be carried to homes that have not burned down. fire officials are combing through the area, trying to ut off the gas lines in certain communities because some of those lines have been opened. we have seen over several days, the efforts where the fire has started. they are reminding people they won't be able to come into the areas because it's just not safe yet. >> thank you. bill, let me go over to you. you were telling us off camera, it's not like the wind gusts are going to be everywhere. but they are definitely going to peak in the middle of the night. walk us through. >> this is not a repeat of last week. 80, 100 mile per hour winds

and we're going to start with nbc's dana griffin, of course, joining us from los angeles, where firefighters are working against the strong winds to contain these fires. we know they're coming. dana, what have we heard from officials on the ongoing efforts? >> yeah, well, that effort remains. >> and you can see just by the presence behind us, not only with the national guard trying to keep people out of this evacuation zone because they are still moving trucks in and out, and you're actually going to see one coming here. you know, these crews are still moving in and out of the mandeville canyon. this is where they had that flare up yesterday. we came and we saw firefighters putting as much effort as they could, doing air drops and trying to cut down that fire. luckily, no new flare ups overnight, which is the good news. but there is that public health emergency because of that toxic ash and smoke in the air, they're reminding people to wear your p 100 respirator or n95 mask. and as you can see, we've got a caravan of fire trucks in hand heading into the mandeville canyon. not sure if there's

nbc's dana griffin joins us live from altadena. dana, what's the latest there?porter: hey, becky, good morning to you. the latest is right now the law enforcement presence that has been brought into these evacuation zones because of the concerns of looting and people getting past the barricades. they have added additional patrol vehicles like the one you see here, also the california national guard has been deployed to these zones. we have a few that are in the hummer and you have one that's standing guard. this is going to help keep the people that do not need to be in these areas out. here in altadena where the fire has destroyed some 13,000 plus acres fire officials are hoping to get a handle on the fire. there hasn't been much -- well, i can't say there hasn't been much growth but they are hoping there won't be as much growth today but obviously there is still an issue with the santa ana winds. right now there are ten fatality reports that the medical examiner will be investigating, some of those remains that they've heard of they haven't even had a chance t

griffin asked great questions at the pentagon briefing yesterday. why couldn't they get more out to the west and i think there will be a lot of questions going around about this response. >> dana at the funeral there for jimmy carter shaking the hands of al gore and his former vice president mike pence and he and the first lady, melania trump sitting down at the funeral. you think about the cost of some of these major natural disasters we've seen. even just this year. it is not just the cost of the finances that are going to take place. for example, los angeles is set to host the olympics in 2028 for example. there is a lot of expense coming across the board and then you have a very complicated situation in many states with insurance. and how do you see the trump administration taking that all on board while they also try to get one big beautiful bill done before the first 100 days. >> you are trying to cut, doge is trying to figure out where to cut back and they will have plenty of things to cut. the federal government is massive. but at the same time, you always have something like this, a natural disaster. something that requires a lot of immediate money going different pla
