here is danielle nottingham with more. >> reporter: derek, the unemployment rate is down, but americans are still struggling to find work. and the new report shows many have given up looking for a job all together. the new labor department report shows 115,000 jobs created in april. many fewer than economists had expected. >> stocks dropped on the news as investors questioned the strength of the country's economic recovery. >> reality is that the recovery really is much, much slower than we anticipated that it was. if in fact you can call it a recovery. >> the retailing industry saw the biggest gains with 29,000 jobs. but the construction industry was one of the biggest losers. 2,000 jobs were lost. despite the low jobs numbers, the white house pointed out the unemployment rate dropped to 8.1%. it's the lowest rate since president obama took office. the president took that message to a suburban d.c. high school. >> now this morning, we learned that our economy created 130,000 private sector jobs in april. and the unemployment rate ticked down again. >> the rate did not drop because of m

danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: with the national debt clock ticking behind him, mitt romney took aim at president obama's handling of the debt. >> he said he would cut the debt in laugh if he became president. instead he doubled it. >> reporter: an election year showdown is shaping up over the debt with republicans saying they will not raise the country's debt limit without big spending cuts and no new taxes. president obama invited leaders from both parties to the white house today to try to find some common ground, and to push job creating measures that he called congress' to-do list. the list includes eliminating tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas, giving tax breaks to small businesses hiring u.s. workers, extending tax breaks for clean energy companies, refinancing health for homeowners and job search assistance for veterans. the president and his democratic colleagues will also push for the buffett rule which calls for higher taxes for the wealthiest of americans. >> what he's done is offered things like the buffett rule which if you calculate it would pay
