i'm dara brown. reaction is pouring in following the shooting death of an apparently unarmed african-american man by a white police officer in south carolina. officer michael slager has been charged with murder in the death of walter scott. we have to warn you, the cell phone video that captured the shooting is graphic. it shows the officer shooting at scott at least eight times as he runs away. a bystander recorded the video which ultimately led to the arrest of officer slager. a small memorial has been set up where the shooting took place. south carolina governor nikki haley released a statement saying in part what happened in this case is not acceptable in south carolina nor is it reflective of our values and i assure all south carolinians that the criminal judicial process will proceed fully. nbc's tracie potts is live in washington. tracie, can we expect more backlash today? >> reporter: we probably are going to see at least more protests in that area today, dara. i want to reemphasize that that

i'm dara brown. breaking news out of kenya, armed gunman firing at people and setting off explosions. there are varying reports of the number of students killed and others possibly kidnapped. tracie potts is live in washington. tracie, we know this is still a developing situation but what do we know right now. >> dar dar ark, we know as many as 15 were killed. 65 were wounded according to the kenyan government. the red cross is telling us 50 students escaped but there are hundreds of students and workers at that college who are unaccounted for. some believed to be held hostage by al shabaab, the somali islamic group that has claimed responsibility. they are claiming this morning they targeted christians at this university in kenya. in this particular area it's very dangerous. in the last hour the embassy in nairobi kenya is warning people american citizens in that region to stay away not just from the college but from that city county entire religion where government employees are already restricted.

i'm dara brown. outrage continues to grow in baltimore following the death of a man who suffered a spinal injury while in police custody. hundreds of people poured into the streets tuesday demanding answers about what happened to freddie gray. as nbc's kirk gregory explains, the feds are now getting involved in the case. >> reporter: the justice department announced tuesday it's conducting its own investigation into how freddie gray suffered a fatal spinal cord injury while in police custody. on monday police released a timeline of the arrest. >> get off me, yo. >> reporter: gray was taken into custody around 8:40 a.m., seen in cell phone video provided by the family's attorney. sometime between this moment and paramedics being called less than an hour later, gray's spine was nearly severed. the 25-year-old succumbed to those injuries sunday. >> what we don't know and what we need to get to is how that injury occurred. >> reporter: in the days that followed, hundreds have taken to the streets, peacef

good morning, i'm dara brown. an arizona police officer is cleared after deliberately striking an armed suspect with his vehicle. a warning, the video you're about to see is graphic. the officer's car was moving swiftly when the suspect refused to surrender. the incident, which happened in february, was captured on police dash-cam video and just released. here is nbc's kurt gregory. >> reporter: it's a shocking image as a marana police cruiser deliberately runs over an armed suspect. the newly released dash-cam video of the incident captures the police cruiser slamming into the suspect from multiple angles. incredibly the suspect was only hospitalized for two days before being released and booked into jail. it started when the suspect, mario valencia, allegedly stole a rifle from a walmart. security camera video captured the alleged theft. >> you don't want to do this. you don't want to do this. >> reporter: later police confronted valencia in the street where he pointed the gun at himself and fired in the air. th
