news4's darcy spencer live now in dupont circle outside one of those places that was robbed. darcy? >> reporter: well, jim, d.c. police want you to take a close look at that video. you can see the man's face very clearly. look you said, we're live outside of the dunkin' donuts here on 19th street in northwest in dupont circle. it's just one of the businesses that was robbed. when you look at this d.c. police surveillance video, you see the man first helping himself to the cash in the tip jar. it happened at the dunkin' donuts on 19th street in dupont circle. he says something to the cashier. she opens the register and hands over the cash. that was january 12th, just before 5:00 in the afternoon. police believe he struck twice at a business in northeast d.c. you again see him saying something to the cashier. at one point, he tries to jump the counter. a clerk pulls the drawer out of the register. he grabs the money and rushes out. detectives believe he hit three businesses on sunday, two of them just minutes apart. that includes a drug store on 40th street in northeast. he walks up t

darcy spencer is on the scene. and we start at the live desk. we sent you a news alert about the shooting. right now an officer dead and a suspect in custody. shots were fired on the 1300 block of lashmere. >> reporter: this is a tragic day for the police department. three officers shot in the line of duty, and one of those officers has, in fact, died. that officer has been identified as ashley you cannot see the house where the shooting happened because the van is blocking it, but police are very active on the scene continuing with the investigation. officers were called here for a domestic-related shooting this afternoon. those three officers were shot and wounded by the suspect. the suspect at some point, i am told, surrendered to police and taken into custody. the alleged shooter lived with his wife and children, and again, no official word of who was the victim in the domestic incident. neighbors told us they heard rapid gunfire around 5:00 in the afternoon, and the kids in the neighborhood playing had to run for cover amid the chaos here.

and darcy.. you're holding what may have caused the crash. it's almost hard to believe, but it might have been as simple as a cell phone plugged into a computer with a u-s- b cable. whether it was a cell phone or some other device, that's what metro says caused the crash--exposing a vulnerability they didn't know existed. the fact that our community's life line could be compromised by something so simple is difficult to understand. but metro confirms someone plugged something in to the 9-1-1 network that caused it to crash. could've been a cell phone, digital recorder, even a kindle or nook plugged in through a they're not calling it a security breach. it wasn't a hardware or software failure. it was caused by someone inside the building that houses metro's 9-1-1 call center. from individual computers to server rooms full of equipment, there are about 130 access points to the 9-1-1 system. metro says they won't be able to isolate which one caused the crash. employees and outside vendors, like maintenance and electricians, can access the syste

"i was thinking it was going to be a great day i look across the street and i see the whites only sign." "alyssa was like hey that's like starting segregation all over again." a swastika and the words "whites only" were painted on the sidewalk on winterwood near nellis yesterday morning. people who live nearby say -- they're not just insulted-- but also concerned. diverse. the young kids-- who just learned about segregation during black history month at school-- want the message removed. one mom says-- the messages popped up after an ongoing parking dispute between neighbors.
