darcy spencer is live and talked to some of the folks affected by the storm. been a long 24 hours for them, right, darcy? >> reporter: it certainly has. jim, to just give you an idea of the devastation, this here is just one of 20 condemned buildings here in prince george's county. you can see there are tarps over of parts of the building. take a look at the very corner of the building. a huge piece is missing. you mentioned there are a lot of power outages here in the county. thousands of people are without power. many of them told me tonight they feel fortunate because they escaped with their lives. loretta banks is in tiers. her condo unit she's rented was heavily damaged friday night during a storm. she and her family are spending the night at a shelter. it could be months before they can move back in. >> i have a 4-year-old who will be 5 monday and a 3 year 0 old. and i've got -- she's asking me about a birthday party. i have to explain to her, baby, i can't give you a birthday party. >> reporter: meteorologists say it was a microburst packing high winds t

darcy spencer has a look at how they're coping. darcy? >> reporter: at the height of the storm pepco had 45,000 outages. they're made progress, but obviously it will take some time. take a look down here. this is newton street in bladensburg and this was the hardest hit area, and there is debris all over the streets and pepco crews are doing all they can. if you come back over this way, just to give you an idea of the sheer fort of the winds, this white thing is the roof of a nearby apartment building that flew about 200 yards and landed here on an suv. so they have a lot of work to do. a lot of these lines are tangled up and we are told it could be sunday night into monday morning before they get the power back on. pepco officials say they're working 24 hours a day to get the power restored and they have their workers as well as contract workers and other utility companies working on this and because of the sheer magnitude of this problem it will take everybody's time to get the power back on. >> our customers are our number one focus, w

darcy spencer joins us now, live from lewisdale with the story. darcy. >> reporter: chris, the tragic scene played out in this driveway two nights ago. the mother who spoke to "news4 today" remarkably says she doesn't blame the driver. that's because the driver struck and killed her own child. now, the little boy who talked, he lives right here inside the home. he's just 7 years old. he's there now recovering from some serious injuries. >> the car came fast, so i got hurt. >> reporter: 7-year-old roberto gonzalez was one of five children who were struck thursday night by a woman who police say accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. gonzalez was just released from the hospital. >> it came, then i was trying to run, but, like, there was a lot of stuff. and i fell. then the car came and pushed me, and i was next to bicycles. >> reporter: the woman police identified as the driver, mariania val cruz lopez had been living at the mother's home. police responded there earlier, because gonzalez's mother, maria, wanted her to move out, and she

darcie spencer has our news four exclusive. >> reporter: dozens of motorcycle riders have a need for speed had to slam on the brakes and pull over. they were crack down on so-called rocket bikes. >> we're getting a lot of complaint from the homeowner's association. the civic associations. and reference to motorcycle racing and also racing vehicles. >> reporter: for six hours, prince georges and other county police departments targeted riders who just can't ride 55. >> they'll come in between the cars on the line. they're doing probably 100 down the road. >> many motorists we talked to support the enforcement, they say it's not just speed that's a problem. it's hotdogging. >> i watched a guy on indian highway from one stoplight to the next. >> most of the cyclists we saw today seemed to be going at a safe speed. chances are they saw all the enforcement in the area and slowed down. speeders are attracted to indian head highway because of its straight streps. in 200 several people died as a result of the street race in this same area. >> how fast would you say some of these bikes are go

darcy spencer is live tonight in cheverly, maryland. >> reporter: pepco is getting help and they can sure use the help. there's a lot of devastation here in prince george's county. this is one example of some of the devastation, a large tree, limbs came down and fell downtown the power line here. there's damage to this home. this is what we're seeing here throughout the town much cheverly. a lot of streets have been blocked. some damage to homes. this is what's left of a power line that fell on a property here in town and the fire marshall told the owners they are lucky that their house didn't catch on fire. a 7,000 volt power line fell on this property on greenleaf road during friday night's severe storms, electrifying the fence and the house. there are burn marks on the home, on the carpeting, even the doorbell was burned out. >> all of a sudden it looked like fireworks outside, yellow blue, green sparks and flames and this power line had come down and was whipping in the wind and sort of beating against our house and making flames. >> reporter: she shows a piece of the torn power

news 4's darcy spencer has the story from riverdale. >> i woke up with a banging sound.s all. >> reporter: authorities say this woman was asleep in her bed when a car came crashing into her bedroom. she was wheeled to an ambulance and taken to the hospital. the woman fortunate to have only minor injuries. the car tire hit her in the head. >> it could have been a lot worse, huh? >> it could have been, yeah. >> reporter: the crash happened at about 3:30 in the morning at the chestnut ridge apartments on riverdale road. police are still trying to piece together how the car ended up in the apartment building. it went halfway inside. bricks came crashing down. a neighbor who happens to be a nurse helped the woman as she waited for medics to arrive. >> she was disoriented, yeah. i prepared an ice pack and put it on her head. >> reporter: the driver was taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. it's unclear whether that driver will face charges in connection with this crash. in riverdale, darcy spencer, news 4. >>> family and friends of a security guard who sacri

darcy spencer has more on the manhunt for this serial rapist. dar,in. >> reporter: jim, as you said this attack happened 126 years ago. it happened when she was pulled into a wooded area and sexually assaulted. she not only survived the attack, she was able to give please a pretty good description of her attacker. >> this grainy video shows the area where a woman was assaulted. it happen july 20th, 1996, in the 4900 block in mcarthur boulevard. police say announced that sexual assault has been linked by dna to the so-called potomac river rapist, responsible to a dozen sexual assaults and a homicide in the 1990s. we're asking for the public's help in identifying this violent offender. >> reporter: police say the man sexually assaulted nine women between 1991 and 1998 in montgomery county, and he murdered a 29-year-old intern christine marjong. the man responsible has never been caught, but with the addition of this evidence to the cold case files, police hope they're getting closer to finding the attacker. >> it takes a lot of courage for the vic

darcy spencer has more on the arrest and the victim's reaction. >> reporter: montgomery county police say this man, 30-year-old david martinez raped a woman nine years ago. a dna hit led to his aresz. >> the detective that investigated the case in 2003 is still in the department. he says it was a vicious and brutal attack. >> reporter: the 23-year-old victim got out of her car about 1:30 in the morning and was walking toward her home when she was attacks. >> he knocked her down. he choked her. she lost consciousness. >> reporter: the victim told police, he threw her in the car and drove her to an elementary school less than a mile away. police developed this sketch. the suspect left the victim here in this parking lot. she was able to get help at a hospital where a rape kit was performed. dna taken from the examination led to the arrest nine years later. police got the hit linking the rape to martinez held in texas after being arrested in november, 2009 for prostitution solicitation. he formerly lived in aspen hill. last week, he was brought back to maryland where he was held without

darcy spencer talked with some families who don't know when they'll be able to move back home. >> reporter: loretta banks is in tears. the condo unit she was renting was heavily damaged friday night. she and her family are spending the night at a shelter. it could be months before they can move back in. >> i have a 4-year-old who will be 5 monday and a 3-year-old. and i've -- she's asking about a birthday party. i have to explain to her, baby, i can't give you a birthday party. >> reporter: meteorologists say it was a microburst packing high winds that tore through the community. >> the wind blew one guy off the ground. threw him up in the air. i knew it was time to go for cover in the house. >> reporter: the fire officials say 20 multifamily buildings have been deemed unsafe. six have significant long-term damage and another 40 are considered uninhabitable for now. about 600 residents have been displaced. >> i walked around the neighborhood and it was like a natural disaster or a tornado. >> reporter: trina brown said she's counting her blessings after running for cover in the bathroom. >

darcy spencer has the news4 exclusive. >> reporter: dozens of motorcycle riders with a need for speed had to slam on the brakes and pull over. police were out in full force on indian head highway today. cracking down on so-called rocket bikes. >> we're getting a lot of complaints from the homeowners associations and the civics associations and with the racing of the vehicles down here. >> that was the reason behind operation road runner. prince georges, state police and the charles county sheriff's office targeted riders who can't just drive 55. >> they'll come in between the cars on the line. so they're doing like probably 100 down the road. >> reporter: many motorists support the enforcement. they say it's not just speed that's a problem. it's hotdogging. >> i watched a guy on indian highway from one stop light to the next. >> reporter: most of the motorcyclists seemed to be going at a safe speed. police say that's a good thing. speeders are attracted to indian head highway because of its straight stretches. in 2008, several people died as a result of a street race in this same area
