buttigieg doing well in davenport. you see dubuque is to sanders. there are some areas where buttigieg is doing well, with the outstanding vote. it's very close. i mean, look at the state delegate equivalents right now. what's the gap here statewide. we're looking at a gap of 25. when every county -- the counties are assigned differently. you can have 150 state delegate equivalents. there could be opportunities here for buttigieg again. running up the score in some of these suburbs here. opportunities for him, opportunities just -- look at these rural counties. he's probably performing very well here. it's not just that he's performing well. buttigieg performing very well. sanders getting pasted there. opportunities there looking around up here. opportunities for buttigieg to gain delegates, sanders to get none. there's certainly opportunities there for buttigieg to pick up ground. we have to get a better sense here of where this came from. i can show you in 2016 what the -- check this out -- this is the size of the lead. in 2016 -- there it is. her

go over to davenport, slight one-point advantage for buttigieg. if sanders wants to catch buttigieg in the state delegate equivalen equivalence, he needs big numbers in the remaining precincts in polk. it is a 418 to 393. that's the number of state delegates they've each one. to make up 25 may seem like a small number but the way they award the delegates, it's hard to get a big advantage here. you really have to run up the score, do it in big places. for sanders to make up 25, that's a tall order for him. we may be approaching a situation when all is said and done, buttigieg is able to say i won the state delegate contest. that's what they've always used to call the winner in iowa. he'd be able to say that. and sanders, if this holds, may be able to say guess what, more people turned out to support me. this is the first preference. this is the first year ever they've released this and right now same number of votes in. sanders leads that. >> that is wild. really quickly, what's the likelihood that with what's out there now, joe biden could drop be

and you can see waterloo, cedar falls, cedar ram i hads, davenport. giant one in the center of the state. that's polk county, des moines, some suburbs of des moines, this is about 70% of the turnout in des moines and it is just over half of polk county that's come in. that means basically 10% of the state is right here. >> let's talk about that. this is des moines. a key part. is it fair to say a lot of the outstanding vote is in des moines? yes. that's the key thing. it is des moines, some pretty upscale suburbs, too. i'll give you an example. go right next door. this is dallas county. the wealthiest county in the state. you have wealthy des moines suburbs. a lot of college degrees. you can see sanders is struggling. buttigieg is running away with it. we see buttigieg doing very well in places like this. there are some places, some neighborhoods like dallas county in des moines. there's also the city of des moines in des moines. what we see when we look closely, most of the outstanding precincts. >> what you're saying is really important. you're sayi

davenport, close race, nobody is going to get a big advantage there. still some to come in story county, aims, sanders and warren, a college county, iowa state, still room for sanders to gain a little bit there. there are pockets here potentially for sanders to make gains. also places like this, mason city where buttigieg is doing well, sanders isn't. some places where buttigieg can balance that. polk county, a third, immediate des moines suburbs, dead even there. a third to come in. when you look at the math on state delegate equivalents, 29 may not seem like a lot, but in a race this tight with 25% to come, it starts to get difficult for sanders to make something up like that. so the possibility here certainly exists that buttigieg will hang on to this and win the state delegates equivalence, that's traditionally how this has been measured. we'll see what that brings. if that does hold, you can expect to hear a lot about this from the sanders side. this is the first time they've ever released the initial preference, closest thing to a popular vote. t

that yes, they may not be as strong in the more populated areas like des moines, cedar rapt, davenportcore in more rural areas. we've been covering just about every single biden event there is over the past few months here in iowa. a lot of the places we go, the best hotel option is more motel than hotel. the best dining option is probably a casey's general store. so these are rural areas. we should consider that tonight as we see a lot of the places where the tv cameras are which aren't necessarily the places the biden campaign is. consider this, greg schultz tonight, campaign manager told david plouffe last week that he believed the biden campaign would be viable in 90% of all precincts. so if that number is much lower than 90%, if they're less than viable, less viable than that number gives, that's a real sign of concern for the biden campaign. >> all right. mike memoli at biden headquarters where they officially know nothing, ergo we know nothing ergo we'll take a quick break in our coverage. when we get raw numbers, you'll hear some sound from steve kornacki across the studio, and
