this is a historic building in downtown davenport. the people living here, according to loved ones we have spoken to, a lot of them, they say, have been living on the brink of poverty, fixed incomes, on the brink of homelessness. these are people we're told who didn't have a lot of places to go, and had been complaining about this building being in various states of disrepair. we'll talk more about that in a second but first to give you the insight we have into the search and recovery efforts in davenport, the fire chief talking about the cadaver dogs and search and rescue dogs who worked through the night as much as possible to comb through the wreckage, given that it still looks like this. take a listen to what he described earlier. >> these k-9 dogs are specialized, and they're specialized in multiple different functions. some are cadaver dogs, some search out live rescue, individuals that may be trapped. they have been working. i think we had a total of six dogs on scene, and doing different shifts, working through the operations.

nbc's shaquille brewster joins us from davenport, iowa. what is the latest there? >> reporter: hi, jose. well, we haven't gotten an updated timeline from officials. no new updates from officials since yesterday's press conference. i'll tell you, here at the site we have been seeing a lot of activity, vehicles going into the site behind me, we see a drone there, we see the top officials from the city from the fire chief to the structural engineer here on site. there is a lot of activity. officials said yesterday they did conduct a limited search of the area. they say they detected no human activity. but they said they were able to recover some animals and turn the animals over to the humane society. but i'll tell you, jose, here on the ground, there is a lot of frustration. there is growing questions about how we got to this point in the first place. i asked officials yesterday about a possible investigation. they said they're putting together a state team of investigators. they did not rule out the possibility of a criminal investigation looking into what occurred

rescue of a woman more than 24 hours after an apartment building partially collapsed, it happened in davenportthe woman's daughter says that she called her from the fourth floor in a part of the building that was apparently unaffected. at least nine have been rescued since sunday. there are still people unaccounted for, but authorities say that the building will be demolished soon. adrienne broaddus is joining us. there are still concerns this morning that there may still be people inside. how can authorities be so sure that everyone is out? >> reporter: it is k06complicat. if you remember yesterday the fire chief told us that they were uses k-9 dogs during the search and those dogs found no signs of life. however, we now know that this ninth person who you just mentioned, the woman, was rescued after officials had moved from their rescue to the recovery phase. and so that is why police are stepping in. you may remember yesterday during our reporting, i shared with our viewers if you are missing a loved one in the downtown davenport area, possibly someone who lived in that building, call 911 a
