"new york times" columnist david brooks and ruth marcus. jonathan is away. hello to both of you.me to the table. mid-terms are 17 days away. the winds seem to be favorably blowing in favor of the republicans and we don't know if that will last. last month, republicans were hyped by one point. and you can see it here -- actually two points. 45%. but this month -- i'm describing it differently. this month, republicans have picked up three points is the upshot and where they stand when voters are asked what party do you support when you think about the congressional vote. what is going on? >> looking at those polls. there is a pretty big shift. four-point lead for republicans. there are some shocking numbers in the polls. democrats were hoping with abortion rights an essential rights, but in our poll, the gender gap is completely gone. in september, independent women voters, not just independent women, they were plus 14 for the democrats and now plus 18 for the republicans. but among independents overall, republicans are leading by 10. there is a big shift and last week, democrats w

i want to read for you what david brooks is saying in his opinion piece about why republicans are surging right now. here's what he says. democrats have not won back hispanics. in 2016, donald trump won 28% of the hispanic vote. in 2020, it was up to 38%. this year, as william eggleston owed in the wall street journal, -- in florida, ron desantis is leading the democrat charlie crist by 16 points among hispanics likely to vote. what do you make of this assessment? >> the polls on this have been all over the place. some national polls suggest that basically democrats are down with hispanics, but only by a few points. other polls, yesterday was a poll here in texas for instance that had greg abbott tied at 48% with hispanics, that would be mind-blowing if that ends up being the final tally, outcome, or anything close to it. i do think that republicans in some areas, especially in places like south florida and in south texas have made some gains. i don't think you're gonna see a tsunami or an overall huge change toward our republicans among hispanics. do you know what? republicans don't need

committee and disagreements may soon break out about the pace of rate hikes joining us is david wessel with the brookingstitution. david, always great to have you with us. is the fed starting to see what it wants to see? >> absolutely. the third quarter gdp report, although looking in the rearview mirror, did suggest that the fed's rate hikes are having the desired effect although the gdp did increase to 2.6% annual rate that was mostly because of trade. domestic spending was slow and of course, housing is taking just an enormous hit and inflation didn't get any worse. so i think that it's beginning to go in the fed's direction, but it's far too early for them to declare victory >> when you look at the numbers and the forecast from amazon, you're looking at a consumer that clearly seems to be feeling a pinch. a pinch of higher costs, a pinch of higher rates, and maybe a pinch of a slowing economy or more -- let me not say a slowing economy, because that's not what the data show, but perhaps some anxiety about what lies ahead. >> well, i think that most of the forecasters, economic forecasters, expect fou

brooke jenkins clarifying mr. pelosi was alone at the time of the attack. he was not the person david depape, the suspect, was looking for. >> at the time that the suspect entered the pelosi home, that he was in in fact in search of mrs. pelosi. at this time there's no evidence in our possession to support that the suspect knew mr. pelosi prior to this incident. >> reporter: now, paul pelosi is still recovering at the hospital after the attack that left him with a skull fracture and a needed surgery. that surgery was said to be successful and his doctors are expecting a full recovery. we also know members of the pelosi family were at the hospital over the weekend. we saw paul pelosi jr. leaving the hospital last night. when asked how his dad was doing, he said, quote, they're rebuilding him carefully. the house speaker returned to their home here in pacific heights last night. we have not seen her or her security detail leave this morning, but we have seen the cars positioned outside the home as well as sfpd. at some point today it is expected that charges will be filed against david

district attorney brooke jenkins revealed disturbing new details. it accuses the suspect david depape of breaking into the home of nancy pelosi to kid animal her early friday morning. he found her husband, paul pelosi, instead, while he was sleeping. the d.a. says depape tried to block pelosi from leaving but he was able to call 911 when he asked to use the restroom. depape allegedly took paul pelosi downstairs to the front door. >> when the door was opened, the defendant was holding his hammer, which mr. pelosi appeared to be attempting to control by holding a portion of that hammer. the defendant then pulled the hammer away from mr. pelosi and violently struck him in the top of his head. >> jenkins says officers immediately reacted. took down depape. the complaint says depape didn't just have zip ties but rope as well. he is being charged with a u.s. official's familiar member and attempting to kidnap. charges will be filed tomorrow. depape's arraignment will be tomorrow as well. meanwhile, earlier today we did learn paul pelosi is now awake and alert and speaking with invest

brooke jenkins was at a halloween event. she told us she expects to file state charges against the suspect, david depape. >> at this point anticipate filing attempted murder charges as well as residential burglary and several other felonies. >> reporter: federal agencies are carrying out a parallel investigation to determine whether depape will face federal charges. as this unfolds more details on the attack are coming to light. san francisco police say zip ties were found at the scene, though they did not say how many or the intended purpose for them. the district attorney says investigators want to clear up a few things.
