joining me now, cnn's john harwood live at the white house and cnn's david culver live in shanghai and david, what's interesting is that we've seen beijing quick to release readouts from that call ahead of the u.s. what exactly is the chinese side saying? >> reporter: everything as far as how they're going to be publicizing this, bianna, is done with a lot of intentions. to see those readouts coming a few minutes into the video call suggested that china was eager to get on top of this narrative early because what they have faced over the past several weeks including just in the recent days has been mounting pressure from the u.s. in particular that there would be consequences, should they take any action to assist with president xi's best friend putin, as he put it, as they move forward in this invasion in ukraine. these are indicative of china's desire to see this conflict come to an end. i'll read you some of what president xi said to state media. the world neither peaceful or t tranquil but the ukraine crisis, they don't want to see partly because of the economic repercussions that

david culver from shanghai.ppens with these calls, we get the chinese readout before the white house readout of this. what are the highlights so far based on how chinese state media is characterizing the call? >> jim, i actually do think it's interesting the chinese put this out so quickly, especially when you look at what was happening this week in the meeting between jake sullivan and his chinese counterpart. out of that meeting, we heard more hard lines coming from the u.s. and chinese were kind of playing catch-up. it seems ahead of this video call, the u.s. was putting out a harder stance whereas the chinese state media were simply heralding this as a discussion of common interests. now we start to see the readout in more detail and interesting to note, some of the lines here from state media, president xi, state to state relations cannot go to the stage of military confrontation. conflict and confrontation are not in the interest of anyone. peace and security are the most treasured wealth of the internatio

cnn's david culver has our report. >> reporter: beijing fighting back against the u.s.its invasion of ukraine. today a foreign ministry spokesperson strongly urging the united states not to undermine china's legitimate rights and interests when dealing with u.s./russia relations, adding, china and russia will continue to conduct normal economic trade cooperation, but might that cooperation soon include military support? >> beijing would think of this as a tightrope walk, but i think from the perspective of most external observers, they see beijing as being an active support for moscow. >> reporter: sources say russia has asked china for drones and pre-packaged military food kits or mres. in a seven hour meeting monday in rome, china's top diplomat told u.s. national security adviser jake sullivan that china wants peace and could serve as a mediator, adding that beijing is also providing emergency humanitarian aid to ukraine. >> chinese government are juggling between several different goals and try to be friends with all parties involved. >> reporter: china is already r

. >> david culver is standing by. publicly beijing has tried to strike something of a balance here, though at times it has endorsed russia's positions in ukraine. do we expect beijing to clear up where it stands on this war? >> reporter: yeah, jim, they're trying to play this neutral ground. the reality is, the longer this war goes on, the more difficult it is for president xi to hold that position. one country, not russia, not ukraine, the u.s., and they have repeatedly acknowledged as you pointed out, russia's so called legitimate security concerns, and domestically when you look at propaganda here, it's essentially the chinese version of what the kremlin is putting out. they're helping each other put out adddisinformation. what china is navigating is the economic sanctions put on by russia, and that would help explain recent actions taken by china that are probably not sitting well with putin. i want to show you some, including china's doubling the ruble trading range, that louse the ruble to continue plummeting. c
