we're joined for more from washington with david gregory. the story line is the president trying to take back the message, but does the white house at least privately take some responsibility for losing control of that message in the first place? >> well, it has to. the president has to. the reality is that these town halls have taken the debate it a place the president didn't want it. i mean let's be honest. this week, so much attention on these so-called death panels that don't exist anywhere in the health care legislation being considered. that's the sign of the debate getting away from the president. he's out west, he's trying to stiffen the spine of more conservative democrats and trying to reach independent voters but primarily as chuck alluded to, he wants to define the terms of the debate. he's got to make it very clear what's at stake, what's included in these reform plans and ultimately definitively say what he's for and what he's going to campaign for if he's going to prevail. >> that leads to my next question, dong is going to ir

now moderator of nbc's "meet the press," david gregory.ely. >> a lot to cover. let's talk first of all about the kennedy replacement. that obviously is a direction gnat story goes to in the coming days. >> and intrigue right now in massachusetts. the governor is trying to get the law changed as senator kennedy wanted an interim snoer to be named before the special election in late january, early february. there's pushback from republicans. the people i have been talking to say you have got democrats who have allegiances for whoever a successor might be in an election withhold be concerned about what a temporary replacement would do, how it would impact their, you know, picks' chances in a special election. this is worked right now. senator john kerry, senator reed among those lobbying to get it done. what's interesting is the people that i've talked indicate senator kennedy himself did not indicate any names to governor patrick in terms of who to see in the temporary seat which is interesting and vicki has said, vicki kennedy said she is n

in washington we also have pat buchanan and david gregory. david, let me start with you here. tell me where the health care debate goes from here. there have been so many starts and stops. the irony of him passing perhaps on the eve of health care reform's greatest achievement in his eyes. a great irony. where do we go from here? >> i think it's uncertain. he was on the sideline in a way he hoped not to be. it became abundantly clear to this white house that as engaged as he was and wanted to be he would not be the one to pull the sides together. i mentioned senator hatch earlier this morning. he pulled away from those negotiations in the senate finance committee and it has fallen to senator baucus to try to deliver that grand bargain with the gop and that has yet to materialize yet even though they're still talking about it in the senate. so the ability of ted kennedy, the lenls lator, the one who knew how to make deals, the one who sort of knew where everybody's temperature was and what they needed on a particular issue, that has not been felt in the heat of this debate at a

> for more on the president's town hall tour and the battle over health care reform we turn to david gregory, moderator of "meet the press." david, good morning. to watch the president we realize if nothing else he's taken back the headlines. it's him the last couple of days, not the meetings with members of congress. but given the fact that there is no one bill, no one plan here, is he able to answer all the critics' questions or is some of this still a bit ambiguous? >> absolutely ambiguous. chuck todd mentioned the fact the president is hinting at flexibility perhaps about the public option because he doesn't know whether that will survive. he'd like to see it in there and not drawing any red lines it has to be in there even though he thinks its he a better deal for consumers. the important part about being out there, he's writing in the "new york times" today on the op.-ed page he has to control this debate and have the debate on his terms f he's going to win the argument and make no mistake, there are vast forces arrayed against him here, both on ideological grounds and also special int

. >>> now with perspective on today's townhall, we are joined by david gregory, moderator of "meet the press." david, given the events of today, how important will it be for the president to continue to hold the town halls on health care reforms to counteract the negative publicity of recent weeks? >> vitally important in this respect, ann. the president wants to regain control of the debate. you heard what he said during chuck's reporting that in his estimation, cable tv, tv in general, likes the ruckus, just likes the conflict and is overlooking some of the more constructive engagement, constructive debate going on around the country. the president wants to separate what he could call extremism from the core of the debate, regain control, reassure americans about what he is trying to do and keep health care reform on track. think of the geography as well. he is out in a part of the country with more conservative moderate democrats, independent voters. he wants to keep them on board. so he has democrats, supporting him, in case he can't get bipartisan reform passed. >>> at the same ti

russert with david gregory. the show is now declining in the ratings fairly quickly because mr.gory is a left-wing guy and says stuff like this. roll the tape. >> and then there was this image this week outside of portsmouth, hall of fame, a town hall event that the president had. this man with a gun strapped to his leg held that sign. "it is time to water the tree of liberty ." it was a reference to that famous thomas jefferson quote, the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. that has become a motto for violence against the government. timothy mcveigh, the oklahoma city bomber, had that very quote on his shirt the day of the bombing of the murrah building when 168 people were killed. bill: all right. so he is tying in a demonstrator, an obama demonstrator with timothy mcveigh. is that valid? >> no. let me start out, though, bill, by offending half of the people watching us right now. if they think that the -- the ones that think that anything goes at town hall meetings. i want people to understand i am against the: who shout

. >> david gregory is moderate of of "meet the press." so sonia sotomayor's all sworn in. how did president obama handle his first nomination? >> by all accounts, very well. he got her through and more to the point, it was preetly low-key affair all the way along. she really was not that controversial and those areas of her record that were controversial were sort of played out and didn't become a huge distraction in the course of the confirmation hearing. so the president has made history with his first hispanic nominee to the supreme court. there will be other nominations that he's expected to make for the high court. i think you also saw from republicans some effort to put the white house on notice that there will be a more difficult fight over ideology in the ones to come. >> health care's become such a volatile situation of late. tell pears flared over the weekend at the latest town hall meeting in des moines. with senators tom harken when he was talking, people were arguing, yelling and screaming. it is hard to imagine that any of the differences over health care can

and joining us now to discuss all these issues is "meet the press" moderator david gregory. id, good to see you. the president's message got a bit muddled on this public option this week did he clarify things today? >> it is not clear whether he clarified. it got muddled before they clearly made a calculation to say they could live without the idea of a public option even though they are saying that that's not what had meant. it is clearly what came across. the president would like to see it, liberal base, would like a public option which is the idea of a government plan to compete with private insurers. they are having a real hard time with it not just among conservatives and republicans but also more conservative democrats. people like them son from nebraska. they can't sell this back home. i still think it is on the table but it is notoing to get through the senate. it may be something they have to work through in a conference committee after they get a main bill passed. >> let's turn to afghanistan mao. the big election there today. light turnout. there have been reports

moderator david gregory, good to see you. let's talk about sonia sotomayor. certainly changing the face of the supreme court. but will it shift the balance at all? >> well, i don't think it will. so that controversial aspect on of her nomination was at the forefront. she'll be a left of center judge. despite this big debate over being empathetic. what's interesting on the vote, though, you see a lot of these reblicans who voted for republicans who are retiring. it shows you the base politics is still such a part of a vote for a supreme court justice. >> what are the odds of those who voted against her, the handful? >> well, for those who voted against her it was really a base play, roigsz of their fight, facing a primary fight in their districts next year. they're in safer territory. >>> the two journalists were freed. president clinton sitting down with kim jong-il. what does this mean for relations between the u.s. and south korea. >> it is a big question. where does it go from here? a lot of people are involved in the back story. how did this come about. g

. >> joining us now is david gregory, moderator of nbc's "meet the press." good morning. >> good morning. >> we watched as the nation paid its final respects to the senator that the washington times called the senator of our times. how will they remember him? >> they'll take the measure of the man, which the tributes have been about the last couple of days and he was an extraordinary father, brother and uncle and he was a rock of a family that needed it. i think what struck me over the last couple of days is there are so many kennedys who needed a father, who needed a father figure. and that was ted kennedy. and the importance of that can't be overstated. the legislative piece will be so important as well, that he made such an imprint through his work in the senate. and it took a long period of time, but he did it with principle and with the power of oratory and sheer dedication. >> you were at this event yesterday. it was poignant, it was emotional. what struck you most about the day? >> without any question, what moved me is what andrea reported. teddy jr.

"meet the press" moderator david gregory joins us now with more and a preview of "meet the press" this sunday morning. we have all seen these anyry outbursts. are they having an impact? >> they are having an impact on the debate. the white house feels the need to hit back to try to win the argument on some of these points to push back against the things clearly not true. you know, lot of the talk about the death panel this week and so forth not part of the bill. one of the things that may be in trouble here is the idea of bipartisanship on this issue. i think democrats and some i talked to today are getting closer to a point where they say let's just get this done with the democratic vote. one of the reasons you saw the president ou west, he's also trying to stiffen the spine of some of those more conservative democrats whom he needs. >> is it working? his town hall meetings seem to be fairly civilized compared to work we have seen earlier. >> it was certainly different. certainly different. he got tough questions. but only a couple. they were civilized questions. so it is just a diffe

joining me now is david gregory, moderator of nbc's "meet the press." great to have you on tonight. thanks for your time. >> you bet. >> before you were doing "meet the press" you were a white house correspondent. how did the white house view ted kennedy? did they view him as the lion? did they view him as the guy they just eventually had to deal with in the senate? >> absolutely. and it was really interesting, covering the bush presidency, because bush's signature issue was education. that's what he came into the white house pursuing. and when he convened a group of experts on it down in austin, he excluded senator kennedy. realizing that was not a good move when he got into office, he quickly courted senator kennedy, invited the senator and some other kennedys to a film about the cuban missile crisis and made it very clear he was going to use the political schools he, bush, had and match those up against what kennedy had. he knew that he needed kennedy as a vital voice, as a potent ally. they even campaigned together for education reform up in boston. i remember thinking i don't t

i want to bring in david gregory, moderator of "meet the press" as well as our chief white house correspondent, chuck todd, on duty on the north lawn of the white house. david, i'll start with you. it's interesting, the president came out, that's not a tone of doing any kind of a jig. this was an unexpected report, but you can see he's really walking that line, where they want to talk up the good news that there is in the economy, but they also want to manage expectations, because there's tough times ahead. >> there are, but this is still psychology, this is argument, not news from the president. he's out there making an argument to talk up what's going well, that there is a beginning to the end of the recession, as he has said, as larry summers saying, we're in a much different place than we were in the last couple of weeks. i think, fundamentally, this is a psychological play here, which is to get people thinking about the fact that things are getting better. they should go out end and money, get a little bit more confident. because that will start to become a self-fulfilling prophesy. what
