the network is replacing david gregory with chuck todd after months of nasty stories about gregory in press. no surprise, of course, a show about beltway politics is fraught with backstage politics. here's the thing about it. gregory followed the most famous moderator in "meet the press" history. tim russert. it was pretty reliably number one in the ratings. russert died in 2008. gregory took over and "meet the press" is now number three. so nbc can point to the ratings as the reason for making the change, but it's been done in an ugly way. gregory isn't just leaving the show, he's leaving the network without even saying good-bye on the air. so to discuss this and the future of sunday morning public affairs program let me bring in frank cessna, the director of gw school of media and public affairs and a former washington bureau chief and jay rosen, journalism professor at new york university. thank you both for being here. >> thank you. >> frank, what do you make of the way this has happened? we've been talking for months about whether gregory was going to keep his job and now all of

there's a new round of rumors about david gregory perhaps on his way out after the mid-terms. not so aggressively denied by nbc. how do you think gregory's doing, and how do you think nbc is treating him? >> i don't have much of a view of the first because frankly i don't have time to watch him. i have a very strong view of the second, which is i think it's lousy. we all are in this business. we all understand we don't have a right to these jobs. it's a tremendous privilege. on the other hand, i think we do have a right to be treated properly and not shabbily. and if you're going to get rid of david gregory, and i don't know that they are -- >> i don't know either. >> i don't have information. then they ought to just do it. but this kind of, you know, twisting in the wind. exactly. to use a cliche. it's unseemly. i think they either ought to say he's our guy, we're sticking with him or not but they shouldn't put him in this him beau. >> when you were at nbc and abc, did you see signs of liberal bias in the news divisions? >> you know, it's interesting. i don't know that i was a

david gregory from "meet the press" joins us right now. i guess the question is, is a cease-fire even possible, let alone peace? >> i think that's still far off. the israelis this morning have pulled back their troops from gaza, redeployed, as they say. they've destroyed many of the tunnels. they say they've degraded a lot of that rocket capacity for hamas to fire rockets in to israel. so some of the military objectives are being achieved by israel. they're not really interested in talking about a formal cease-fire. but i think there is a little bit more room now for some concessions now that they're able to declare that what they sought out to do that they have been able to do. >> we were talking about president obama. on friday we heard very strong support for israel, really pushing for this truce. but the response from netanyahu. is there a sense that when it comes to u.s.-israel relations things are a little messy behind the scenes? >> i think they are tense behind the scenes, particularly what the secretary of state has been doing try

david gregory joining us. a lot of issues to get to. we start with what's going on in iraq right now. the president addressed it yesterday. questions the timeline. let's hear what he had to say. >> we're not moving our embassy any time soon, not moving our consulate any time soon and that means that given the challenging security environment, we're going to maintain vigilance and ensure our people are safe. the most important timetable is the iraqi government getting formed and finalized. >> all right. and that same press conference, the president telling the american public we're not going to have full involvement in iraq as far as ground troops are concerned. but is that really possible to keep out? >> well, it's certainly possible and i think the president's resolute about that primarily because it's his view it wouldn't work. this is an iraqi government problem. what he alluded to there is important which is he wants to force the iraqi government to change, to fundamentally change. get a new prime minister. and to be unified enough

worst ratings ever under david gregory as the change looms that the show is worth taking a note a look how at how this once great pillar of political news television has ended up at the bottom of the ratings barrel and how it can be made great again and to be fair it's frankly not all david gregory's fault simply swapping him out for chuck todd is not going to write that ship one of the major problems with meet the press of late is that the show assumes that its audience is not following the news that they're not keeping up with things that they're not reading the news and thus has no clue about what happened during the week but as jason lincolns points out over at the huffington post the majority of people who tune in to meet the press are well versed in the stories of the week and have already absorbed the talking points of the major players availed themselves of a wealth of insight and expertise and have even participated in their own discussions and current events and if it's not of the show's viewers it's certainly true of the show's potential viewers which is like job one right g
