two of those students, david and lauren hogg, describe their experience in a new book, "#never again: a new generation draws the line." hari sreenivasan recently spoke with them about their movement, and he began with the da immediately following the tragedy. >> i know for me i never thought i would go through aisthing like, ut those first couple days, you would think it would be so painful, and it was, but if anything it was more my whole community was numb. we were numb. we didn't feel anyanthing. that is almost worse than feeling something, because being numb is awful. i think it's worse than actually hurting, becau you're just so in shock that you don't know why you aren't feeling grief yet. that was the wost part of grieving so far. yo>> sreenivasan said one of the reasons of your response was your inability to help her. >> yeah to, have somebody soou close toike my sister is to me and hear them cry that much to the point they canak even sor days on end, and i can't do anything about it other than just try o prevent

reporter: all people of all colors, shapes, and sizes are affected by gun violence -- >> reporter: david hogguch of his first summer out of high school leading rallies coast to coast. he's one of the survivors of the marjory stoneman douglas shooting that left 17 people dead. still, he says, he supports the second amendment. >> it's okay if you learn a gun. my father's a gun owner. before going on this tour, i disassembled and reassembled his gun. >> reporter: but he and other students want common sense gun laws, including universal gun laws, background checks and a ban on semiautomatic rifles. >> if you're shooting people from 70 feet away, you're not defending yourself, you're hunting. >> reporter: at every stop, they're registering voters, hoping to change the balance of power in washington. a gallup poll credited them for a drop in democrats supporting the nra. gun rights advocates are pushing back, hosting their own rallies around the country, including this one high school students organized in chicago. >> i plan on owning a gun for self-defense, to defend me and my family. >> reporter:

she had the door open because of environmental laws -- david hogg was in my class. in the front, he was sitting in the front. did you hear, that and i was sitting in the back and i wasn't paying attention? there was 20 minutes left to school and i was like let's go, and just a split second after he said that the fire alarm went off. we go down the stairs, and then just as she explained, pops went off, but i -- i kind of disappointed myself because i did not react quick enough because i was in such denial for such a long time, not just then but hours after it even happened. i turned around and i looked and i looked at my teacher, i was like where do i go? and i kept walking straight and the culinary teacher just dragged all of us in, even two other teachers, and there was about almost 30, 40 -- i can't even remember. >> 65 in our classroom. >> and we were all just crammed there. i remember a girl in the back was having a panic attack. she couldn't breathe, and i remember chef kirk coming in saying don't worry, it's just a drill. so i just calmed down. guys, it's fine
