that is where david louie is this afternoon. david? >> lockheed martin is the largest employer. and 200 layoffs falls in line with the goal of laying off 3.4% of the global work force of 116,000 people. now, lockheed martin space missiles operation is based here in sunnyvale on matilda avenue. much of the work is classified defense projects. but 200 layoffs cut across the board, engineers and clerical workers. the layoffs will be gradual ask completed by the end of the year. four buildings will be shut down, lockheed martin tells me they've been making these four older structures expendable. but staff is briefed ahead of time. >> we never like to hear about layoffs of any size. at this point we're going to sna touch with lockheed martin making sure our resources are available to them to the extent possible. >> sunnyvale says it's gone through boom and bust cycles before. a familiar pattern here in silicon valley. government spending grows or contracts. the town center is an example of the expansion. sunnyvale added 750 new businesses, creating 4,000 new jobs. so with the layoffs

live on highway 17, david louie, abc7 news. >> it's a virtual parking lot. on highway 17, the storm knocked down this tree early in the morning on santa clara county side blocking one lane for an hour. >> take a look at this. there is wet cement. these are pictures. two children were on board the bus at the time. the bus, as you can see has been towed away. the storm caused big problems in the south bay. 15,000 pg&e customers lost power overnight. most customers had had their power restored but the utility is reporting still about a thousand customers without electricity in that area right now. classes at san jose silver creek high school were cancelled today. students were sent home with a warning to be ready tomorrow. >> particularly my classroom, we're going to have our tests but basically you've got an extra day to study. not getting out of it. >> the power was restored this morning. a thousand customers still powerless. >> the storm system is bringing snow to the tahoe area right now this, is a live look at the camera. the area is getting rain at lake l

david louie joins us live from one of the crime scenes. >> reporter: kirk glen drive has been a crime scene for eight hours ever since a san jose police officer shot and killed a suspect who rammed his patrol car after stabbing four people. it's unclear why the suspect stabbed four people. there are bloodstains near the front door and used medical supplies on the front lawn. police said they believed the victims and their attacker knew each other. the suspect got away by carjacking a minivan on north jackson avenue. he then got on the 680 freeway in the wrong direction but can't cause any accidents. but once he exited and got back on the city streets, san jose police were in pursuit. a neighbor saw him driving erratically. >> he was going fast. we were on the opposite side and he was zigzagging. >> reporter: the neighbor then heard gunfire. the suspect turned into a cul-de-sac with an officer on his tail. >> there were gunshots. >> was there any return fire by the police? >> we don't know. just five or six times in a row. yeah, that's it. >> reporter: the shots came from the officer a

david louie joins us live from one of the crime scenes. >> reporter: kirk glen drive has been a crime scene for eight hours ever since a san jos police officer shot and killed a suspect who rammed his patrol car after stabbing four people. it's unclear why the suspect stabbed four people. there are bloodstains near the front door and used medical supplies on the front lawn. police said they believed the victims and their attacker knew each other. the suspect got away by carjacking a minivan on north jackson avenue. he then got on the 680 freeway in the wrong direction but can't cause any accidents. but once he exited and got back on the city streets, san jose police were in pursuit. a neighbor saw him driving erratically. >> he was going fast. we were on the opposite side and he was zigzagging. >> reporter: the neighbor then heard gunfire. the suspect turned into a cul-de-sac with an officer on his tail. >> there were gunshots. >> was there any return fire by the police? >> we don't know. just five or six times in a row. yeah, that's it. >> reporter: the shots came from the officer af

abc7 news business and technology reporter david louie takes a look at the change. ♪ >> reporter: burlingame-basedgin america just released this new safety video but the admonition to turn off devices soon will be moot. tablets, e-readers and mobile phones can stay on before takeoff and landing as long as they are in airplane mode, making cell phone voice calls still will be banned. we asked industry analysts why it took so long for the faa to change the rules >> the faa is a very conservative organization. safety always comes first. but we are now at the point where the devices are safer. the technology on the airplanes are safer and the way the airplanes are built make this more possible. >> reporter: each airline must submit its device plan for faa certification so the rollout of the policy may not be instantaneous. an estimated two-thirds of passengers carry mobile phones or smartphones on board. 40% have tablets. what the faa didn't make clear is whether video calls are allowed when using wifi allowed on some airlines. >> some of the airplane's wifi systems can't support video chat, whether i

david margolick. welcome. thank you, ken. are there other books out there about a single song? i'm familiar with dave marsh's take on louie louie, but this has to be an unusual premise for a new book. i don't think there are very many. i think there's a book about amazing grace, and i'm told there's a book in the works about we shall overcome. but i think there really aren't many songs that you could write entire books about. this is one of the few. and this was not a tough sell to a publisher because they saw your piece in vanity fair. they saw the piece in vanity fair, and they thought that it could be expanded upon into a book. and it certainly works very well. for a generation of americans who are not familiar with the song-- and it's been conspicuously absent-- how would you describe the song and its impact? well, the song was a song about lynching. you know, it was a song about black bodies hanging on southern trees, and it was a song that came out in 1939 at a time when people simply weren't talking about this kind of thing. you know, it was before jackie robinson. it was before martin luther king. it was before th
