david piper is streaming live from the capital city tripoli. >> two intense battles as rebels try to fight their way into two of khadafy strongholds. the khadafy forces the actually launched a counter offensive against the rebels surrounding the city but they were beaten back. also remembers launched another offensive themselves but they weren't well coordinated and the ground troops got ahold of tanks and missiles and they got to the northern gate they were forced back on fire from khadafy forces which strategically high positions. now, the in the hometown of khadafy, intense fire going on. we are told by the rental sources they remain around khadafy's palace but they are taking heavy casualties, 25 rebels have been killed and 35 injured and they may have lost a rebel canned in the fighting. so taking quite a hit at this time but nato forces are also supporting the rebels as they try to drive in to sirte. overnight, there were 11 attacks on the missile batteries in that city. but the spokesman for khadafy, he has been speaking by telephone and he said that these nato strikes have ki

david piper joins us from tripoli with the latest on the situation. david? >>reporter: hi, uma, rebels launched a new offensive to take gaddafi's home town of sirte. they are facing fierce resistance. snipers firing from marks and other high rise buildings and holding up the advance. one of gaddafi's son was seen before the offensive. rebel fighters are struggling to take a town. they have pulled ba to regroup. there are concerns that terrorist could get hold of sophisticated weapons. we had a tip of one secret munition dump that gaddafi created ar the tripoli airports. finding the weapon's cache was easy and signs that people have taken what they wanted. in the other warehouses there are munition and in the warehouse there are 50,0 land mines and antipersonnel and antitank mines and they are in a civilian area and totally unguarded. these weapons were transported by gaddafi to places like this so they could escape nato air attacks. but the problem is people are taking them for ied's or sold on the black market. libya's de facto government and national tribu

david piper live in tripoli with the latest. david? transitional council appeared here in tripoli today. this is the first time he has come here since rebels took the city. jaleel was mobbed by the crowd as he arrived to the airport. his appearance seems to show rebels are about to move their government from benghazi to the libyan capital. the interior minister said the challenge now is to organize the state which will be, he says, harder than the military campaign. the fighting is still going on. rebel forces move to clear them from the remaining towns they hold. but wallid, 90 miles southeast of here, they face the stiff resistance today. some rebels told us they managed to get in the town but forced back after coming into heavy fire. they pulled back to wait for air attacks to clear the way. nato denied it was coordinatorring the operation -- coordinating the operation but they nuanced they were conducting operations where there have been reports of airstrikes. there has also been intense fighting around the hometown of gaddafi. the

david piper is joining us with details. david? i >> reporter: hi, uma. government forces are now pushing in to gaddafi's hometown of sirte trying to capture it. the first time he got to considerable numbers in past, they have been beaten back after suffering a fierce resistance from the gaddafi loyalists. this time the commanders are closer to saying they launched the new offensive because families of many of the fighters from the nearby town of mismisurata are trapped in the town many are hiding in basement and they want to save them. the advance is held by the more nato airstrike overnight. the both confirmed now that the ammo dump, antiaircraft battery and command and control facility. but the rebel fighters are suffering still in sirte. the snipers from gaddafi forces are firing them from -- [ inaudible ] that is holding up advance at this hour. there is another pro-gaddafi stronghold in the desert 90-miles southeast of here. fighters are also being held up, mainly by terrain, the gaddafi forces hold the high position. the commanders there are consid
