davidson, so good to see you. all right.ent are you feeling about everybody's welfare as we head into the holidays? >> well, i'm certainly worried about what's going on in a lot of places, but particularly right here at home in west michigan. >> what's happening there? >> well, we've been dealing with about three weeks or so of increased numbers. cases in our hospital that are higher than they have ever been. our emergency department typically has between six and ten patients waiting to be transferred somewhere or admitted to our hospital to beds that frankly that don't equipment our icu across all of western michigan is operating at 140% capacity right now and that capacity is really being taken up by covid-19 patients who are unvaccinated. it's just the reality of what we're seeing. you know, we're normally used to running 90%, 95% or so and being full but being manageable and now we're at a point where it's no longer manageable. the system that we were afraid is going to break really has broken, and i think people thought

rob davidson has been gracious to be with us through this pandemic and help us understand what's happening where he is. he's an emergency room physician in west michigan and the executive director of the committee to protect public health. the headline i saw in "the detroit free press" this morning was that your state is the worst, that the hospitals are pushed to capacity, the number of covid patients climbed almost 50% in the last month. so bring us into your experience right now. what are you seeing at the hospital? >> listen, for us in west michigan, it's been three or four weeks like this. we've kind of led the state, unfortunately, in these grim statistics. our hospitals have been full. we've had at least two weeks where every shift i go in there's a quarter to half of the emergency department that i work in is filled with patients waiting for beds that don't exist. truly our icu capacity and entire system throughout the west side of the state is at about 140% of what its maximum would be. we've expanded capacity, you know, so we can take on all those patients, but it's, you know, wh
