nbc 10's deanna durante joins us with more on that injured firefighter. >> reporter: outrage tonight from firefighters. that firefighter was standing here directing traffic. he had just finished an elevator rescue and the fire truck was backing out of this driveway here when a woman came down the street according to firefighters and hit him. >> at first all i saw was a person flying through the air. >> reporter: tyler didn't see the car right away. he heard the impact and rushed outside. >> i just punched in 911 on my phone and ran out. >> reporter: then he saw fire trucks were already there. >> that was the craziest part. he hit pretty much dead center on the hood. he had a very large gash on the top of his head. it looked like his nose might have been broken. he had a big bruise on his right forearm, kind of cuts and scrapes all over. >> two children and their mother coming out of a pediatrician's office. just a routine call. the elevator stopped working. we had to go in, get it open, get them out. wasn't a big deal. >> reporter: with the mom and her kids rescued the job was over u

nbc 10's deanna durante has more on changes for septa riders. >> many of the septa bus routes will be detoured or suspended in the center city region. >> reporter: residents will begin seeing detours as early as the thursday night before the pope arrives so the secret service can begin constructing secure perimeters. beginning at 10:00 on september 24th, regional rail trains will be on the weekend schedule and won't stop at suburban station. subways and trolleys will not stop at 15th street or city hall. that will continue until the end of day on friday. limited service will be in place saturday and sunday. the city and world meeting of families announced the papal playbook will be on the world meeting of family website starting monday afternoon. it's designed to inform residents and provide resources for them. the city says it will be publishing maps on its website to inform residents of where convenience stores, grocery stores and hospitals are so they can find them easily. the mayor stressed those who will be in the restricted areas should plan and stock up on items they need becau

deanna durante joins us in harrisburg. deanna? >> this news conference was billed as an opportunity for her to answer questions about the criminal charges she's facing, she didn't take any questions, she read a statement, and she talked about e-mails that her office uncovered sometime ago. she blames those e-mails as to why she's facing criminal charges today. >> i am innocent of any wrongdoing. >> kathleen cane is accused of leaking grand jury information to the press. ordering staff to dig through employee e-mails. she did not answer questions or explain how e-mails uncovered after her review of the jerry sandusky investigation relate to the criminal charges. she called those e-mails sexually explicit or religious and racially offensive. she painted a picture of a plan that had been hatched years ago, to remove letter from office. >> the chain of events that led to this moment began long before that. it began with the group of state educators and judges passing pornographic and religiously offensive e-mails among each other. >>

nbc10's deanna durante is there in norristown with more for us. >> reporter: patrick reese, ahead of the security detail, and her driver appeared before judge carpenter in the courthouse to answer to a contempt charge. it's alleged after the attorney general learned there was an investigation surrounding a leak of grand jury information, that reis was ordered to wraek into employee e-mail files to gain any information about the investigation. he appeared here with his lawyer in front of the judge. he pled not guilty to the charges. he was released after the judge ordered he be released on an unsecured bail, $5,000. he was told he needed to appear here again in september for a bench trial to answer to the charges. now, prosecutors in this case tell us the investigation here is continuing. they also tell us more charges could be coming. that is the very latest outside the courthouse in norristown, deanna durante, "nbc10 news." >> thank you for that update. an associate of kathleen kane pleading not guilty on charges. >>> more breaking news. going back to the scene of that hit-and-run i

nbc 10's deanna durante is live in wilmington with more on this major step. >> reporter: well, schooltricts like colonial school district that are part in the city of wilmington and part outside the city will lose a good fair number of their students. about 200 students here will move to another district and the work now begins in figuring out how to move all the students around and how to pay for it. >> i think it may actually probably work out a little better. it's a little complicated. >> reporter: yolanda is all for the restructuring plan, one that got its first boost by delaware governor markell. he signed two bills into law, one giving the board of education the right to change decades-old school district boundaries and another that creates an education commission to begin the process of combining four school districts in the city of wilmington. >> it's really about trying to make sure the wilmington community is more engaged in the education of their own children. >> reporter: the old district lines were drawn 60 years ago as an effort to desegregate schools but the plan has so

nbc 10's deanna durante is live. what else have you learned here? >> reporter: well, we did learn that the chester county district attorney says that that friendly fire incident happened as smith was attacking a sheriff's deputy inside the chester county justice center, and they say that that deputy is recovering as well as the deputy who fired the fatal shot. >> as the attacker was coming in with a knife and stabbing him in the back, and the other deputy sheriff was firing, two rounds hit the person with the knife. the third round actually went through the microphone that's on the front of the chest and then went through and hit the finger of the deputy sheriff. >> reporter: the d.a. says the injured deputy is in good spirits and will be back to work soon. he says the man responsible for killing curtis smith inside the justice center tuesday is also recovering. >> in this case, it's a justified shooting. people reacted as they're supposed to but every single courthouse in the nation needs to be ready to react this quickly. >> reporter: we know more

deanna durante joins us live in west philadelphia with more. deanna? >> the owners of this west philadelphia funeral home tell me they're helping unite those who run the powell funeral home a day after three bodies were found in a nearby garage. the outside of the powell funeral home had a sign in the window yesterday saying it was closed for renovations. police sources want to know more about the closure and they're looking into the home's finances. it didn't take much for us to dig up page upon page of civil action against this funeral home that dates back to the mid 1980s. according to the department website, the funeral home owes more than $17,000 in back taxings. and the irs and the pa department of revenue have both placed leans on the property for unpaid taxes. we asked janet about the documents and the allegations that there are unpaid taxes. she refused to talk to us about them. the family is one of those inside the garage, says their loved one died at the rehabilitation facility. how his remains ended up here. >> this is news to us, we need t

deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >>> more breaking news, this time at the jersey shore, where a 12-year-old boy is in the hospital after sand collapsed right on top of him. lifeguards and beach goers worked to try to free the boy and the lifeguards performed cpr on him. this all unfolded on the 17th street beach in surf city, ocean county this morning. that's where we find nbc 10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, that hole was right here but police have since filled it in and since 5:00, i have learned the boy is from pennsylvania but his family also has a house here in this jersey shore resort. investigators took measurements in a hole on the surf city beach where authorities say sand collapsed on a 12-year-old boy. >> saw a little boy and his eyes were closed and his face was covered in sand. >> reporter: witnesses tell us the boy was digging a hole with other children on the 17th street beach around 1:45 this afternoon when the sand caved in on him. >> he dug really deep and got in there and the children had trouble getting him out. >> repo

deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >>> speaking of trains, septa released new information today about another lottery for special passes. this time for specific trolley lines and its high speed line. the lottery will be held on wednesday. septa has allotted 20,000 special passes for the norristown high speed line but only two stops will be open. the gulph mills station and villanova station. tickets will be $10 each. they will be good from september 26th through the 28th. there will be 5600 papal passes available for the trolley route 101 and another 5600 for trolley route 102. those passes are $10 as well. two stops on each line will be open, springfield mall and lemey avenue and north street and clifton-alden on route 102. the lottery will be held wednesday, august 12th. customers have until 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. to enter. septa says no matter what time you enter, everyone has the same chance. you can request up to ten passes just like the last time. septa will notify winners via e-mail one week from today. the passes will be sold using the same lottery system that septa held for its reg

deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >>> also right now at 5 you::00 chaos in the chester county courthouse. a man attacked a sheriff's deputy with a knife. police say that attacker was curtis smith. tonight, nbc 10 has learned new details about his alleged criminal history. it includes jumping the fence at the white house. >> nbc 10's rosemary connors joins us from the chester county courthouse. what else have you learned about that suspect? >> reporter: curtis smith of coatesville was charged with harassment, assault, disorderly conduct, all allegedly in relation to a domestic dispute with his wife, according to smith's attorney whom we spoke to earlier today. smith was here at the justice center looking into a court-ordered counseling. however, authorities tell us instead, chaos ensued. according to the chester county district attorney, smith used a knife and attacked a deputy sheriff right in the lobby of the courthouse. another deputy shot and killed smith. he died at paoli hospital. the justice center went into lockdown. we spoke to employees who had to evacuate from the building. they
