deborah feyerick is with us with a little more information. this is a huge university, 66,000 students. what more can you tell us? >> reporter: well, we do know there's a huge response right now. the police are on scene, other agencies responding as well. the fire department there also. that part you read out, the run, hide, fight, that is really a warning to the students. that's what they are supposed to do. first they run. if they encounter anybody, then they fight. i'm sorry, then they hide and then they fight. so that is normal sort of when you are dealing with an active shooter situation. that's what they are conveying to the students. right now we know that police are responding as are other law enforcement agencies and they are trying to determine exactly what is going on. we are told that it is in an area -- it's on the campus. we are trying to confirm that right now. those are the few details that we have as we work the phones. >> all right. deborah feyerick, stand by. i will let you get to finding out more information. do we have an

bringing in now cnn national correspondent deborah feyerick and cnn senior analyst tom fuentes. the real question here now, deborah is, who this is suspect we're hear has now didn't killed and why did this happen? >> reporter: that's part of the investigation. that law enforcement official tells us one suspect who is dead, and use add very large knife in the words of one eyewitness, it looked like a machete. apparently the gunshots everyone heard was a quick-thinking police officer who responded and after the crowd scattered, according to this eyewitness, that's when the police officer opened fire shooting several times. the eyewitness saying at least three times. and he credits his police officer with very quick thinking that possibly saved a lot of lives. the gunman, brianna you say, did enough damage to send eight people to the hospital with injuries. one initially described as critical, but they're all characterized as non-life threatening. a car was involved. that's possibly why we saw this massive sort of s.w.a.t. team sweep of the garage that everybody focused on. one indi

cnn's deborah feyerick has been koevg the story what are the details and what does it mean for governor chris christie? >> reporter: it means two people very close to him have now been found guilty of manipulating public resources and did this specifically by closing different traffic lanes at a very busy bridge, the george washington bridge, that connects manhattan and new jersey, and they not only closed those lanes but created such bad gridlock for four days they actually deprived drivers, taxpayers, of their right to pass freely. that's what they were found guilty of essentially. all of this happen eed allegedl because they wanted to punish a mayor who refused to support chris christie for his re-election campaign. now, the jury got this case monday. chris christie kept a very low profile since then. he had no public schedule. today, though, once the guilty verdict came down he issued a very harsh statement against his two lawyerists or former loyalists saying, like so many people in new jersey i'm saddened by this case and saddened about the choices made by bill baroni, brimp bridg

running down leads and trying to figure out exactly what inspired this guy. >> check in with deborah feyerick. looking into all of this. what are you hearing, deb? >> we're hearing a quick thinking of an officer who mitigated the injuries that could have occurred. we're told campus police chief basically saying really within less than a minute after this attacker drove his car on to the sidewalk hitting several pedestrians, a police officer did respond, ordered him to, engaged verbal commands allegedly to drop the weapon and when that didn't work he opened fire basically killing the attacker. and it was really that timing, because you had somebody on-scene quickly able to engage the attacker and neutralize the situation. we are told there are nine injured. two underwent surgery. two of them apparently who, four with stab wounds. four who were injured by the vehicle and another woman walked in after it was all over. again, sort of took cover and then went to the hospital, is what we're being told. the columbus police chief says they are working closely, you heard it was said, with the fbi dete

let me bring in deborah feyerick, our national correspondent who's been working on getting more information and also harry halk is with us, cnn law enforcement analyst, retired nypd detective. tell us more about what police say about this suspect. >> what we know so far is he's an 18-year-old somali man. lived in the area. columbus, ohio, has the second largest somali population after st. paul. >> in the country. >> in the country. so law enforcement knows radicalization could be a threat. unclear, we have his name, but what his motive was. whether something sparked him to do this, whether it was communication, whether it was an action. we don't know. that's what investigators are looking at right now. they're looking at all of his electronics, his communications, they're searching the car, the vehicle. it belongs to a family member. that caused a little confusion in the beginning. they're looking at whatever they can to try to identify who he is, who he was in connection with and what may have inspired him to do this. so, all of that under active investigation right now. >> so, he was sayi

deborah feyerick is "outfront." >> i realize this is a whole different life for me now. >> for a man going when he wants where he wants the president's unprompted visit to a new york manhattan restaurant drew attention. trump tower for secret service is a logistical and tactical nightmare. among the top three concerns. >> checklist is probably the height. the glass and then the streets around it. the threat from the vehicle-born explosive device. >> reporter: also the threat from the air. the faa has established a temporary no fly zone, four times the height of trump tower and expanding two nautical miles along one of the busiest flight corridors on the east coast. and the outside is now guarded. and everything inside trump tower will have to be secured from the air vents to the elevators. even floors surrounding both the president elect's penthouse apartment and his office on the 26th floor. >> the standard general rule when doing a security check is one floor below and one floor above but that doesn't always work. >> right screening now a way of life with anyone going in or out of

for more on what happened, deborah feyerick is with me, cnn international correspondent. let's start from the beginning. take me back. >> absolutely. and it's interesting because this did come across as an active shooter but that may be because the police officer who responded so quickly initially gave the suspect verbal commands, ordered him to drop his weapon. then when that fail, he open fire, neutralizing this threat. all of this started about 9:52 this morning. this man in his car drove up onto the curb, hitting a number of pedestrians who were around the vicinity of that chemical engineering building. then he got out of his car and started waving this huge butcher's knife around. an eyewitness said he had a crazy look in his eyes and he was chasing people around. he didn't seem to appear focused on one individual. he was just going in all directions. and that's when that police officer drove up to the scene and was able to essentially neutralize the threat. now, part of the problem, brooke, is they didn't know whether this man was acting alone or whether there were

deborah feyerick is live outside of trump tower in new york with more. what was the scene there, deb? >> really surprising just how quickly the crowds grew. they start would a couple hundred people and then expanded to thousands. all of them marching in various cities across the country. here in new york city they marched up fifth avenue against traffic, shutting down traffic for quite some time. and you could tell in the crowd a lot of anger and also a lot of fear. people are fearful that advances made over the last couple of years, in fact, will be turned back. and the basic human rights that they value in the crowd are being threatened. in that crowd, along with the fear, there was a deep sense of disbelief. >> not my president! not my president! >> reporter: protests breaking out in at least 25 cities. >> donald trump has got to go! >> reporter: hundreds of demonstrators stopping traffic in los angeles on the busy 101 freeway. cnn's deborah feyerick is outside trump tower there. i notice those big dump trucks are gone.reporter: security right now is pretty much is as tight as it can be. the nypd will no longer allow trucks to pass by trump tower. it's a 58-story glass tower and it has been a public atrium where people can go in and out. they're not going to be able to do that without being screened. that is a big change. also you can see the cars behind me. this is a five-lane street. it is going to be reduced to three lanes. there's going to be a heavy shop shooter presence on some of the roofs and people will not go anywhere near the tower unless they are screened, that includes along 56th street which is the entrance into the residence area. they'll have to subject their packages and bags, anything to screening and that's the way it's going to be inside trump tower as well. secret service has to account for the elevators, they have to account for the floors surrounding where the president-elect is going to be residing and they have also got to be concerned about air vents. so there's really a lot
