today, students of lyons-decatur northeast gave back to veterans today. every student, preschool through 12th grade took part in a special assembly . they do it every year. after the pledge of allegience, fourth graders read a special poem. some of the seniors shared the stories of veterans they interviewed. the students also raised $5,000 for a veterans memorial being plannein lyons. jerry ludwig accepted the check and was so moved he couldn't speak. i was recently in decatur illinois talking about a weeknight that over 200 people were out to hear me talk about my book and my story but also these individuals had what they can do because they are concerned about the direction of the country that we are going in and people are coming out on the weekend and into the tv cut -- evening and people are active and it is a wonderful thing to see. >> out of the 200, how many were black? >> there were three, that was actually. and there are situations where there may not be any black individuals out of. they go through the churches and let them know that we are having this and invited and welcomed in talking about education and energy and empowerment going out and it's unfortunate when they don't show up. but i am also taking the message to chicago and to maryland and taking the message here and at the annual convention last year and people are open-minded and they want to hear how they can play a role and get involved because when the government is involved in our everyday lives, that is a trigger for a lot of people to take a stand. >> fro
