like us to work with the department, i have a recommendation, and have come a frjr - -- commissioner dejesus with the patrol officer association, with a proposal to the commission for changes? >> i would like input from the commissioners, and perhaps i can get input as we go forward. or we can do it now, or we can do it when we come back. commission slaughter: i am happy staying put, and i think we have some the brown act issues if there were to be some sort of meetings, so i think it is better that we do it now, and you can work with the city attorney had come back after that. by view is that -- i will go from the general to the specific. rules need to be a lot tighter. i think we need to give a hard look about what the justification is for having an assistant patrol specials at all. and we need to make a decision as a commission about whether there is a justification for having assistant patrol specials, and i think quite honestly, i love to have even a broader discussion about whether there should be patrol specials at all. you would have to have a charter amendment and a whole other set

quite frankly, i talked to commissioner dejesus tonight. we like to do it here in front of the commission. we think the community needs to know what someone looks like after years of missing holidays with their families, new year's eve, christmas, working at night when everyone else is asleep. standing at a protest line, having stuff thrown at them. doing that with great professionalism, doing it for over 30 years to protect the city. we need to honor them more when they leave this department. commander harper, retired captain brown, it was a great thing. all the commissioners should really be there next time. that was excellent. >> i also found the retirement ceremony celebration to be really a wonderful event, thank you for resurrecting that and bringing it back to the department. i have a question going back to the hall report that you gave in connection with the allegations of police theft. it came to the public's attention a couple of weeks ago. i want to make sure that i understand this correctly and the public as well. there were rou

commissioner dejesus. >> good afternoon, supervisors. i want to commend supervisor mirkarimi and this committee for bringing in this measure. i certainly would support it. i am year as an individual, but i have also been public defender for many years -- i am here as an individual, but i have been a public defender for many years. i support the measure because it is a way for the city to be proactive rather than reactive. one of the things the police department has done is to reduce crime in the last few years, and we would like that to continue. i think the measure is a win-win for the returning citizens and a way to get their feet on the ground, to get them secure, to keep them from the offending. it is a win for the companies with the tax credit. if successful, hopefully, they will hire more ex-offenders. it certainly could be successful for the police in terms of services we have to provide on the front lines. as a public defender, i work with many offenders and continue a relationship with them after they are released from custody.
