i derek van dam, stay safe and standby. we'll come back to you and check in with you throughout the hour. i also want to go now to cnn's carlos suarez, who is in st. petersburg, florida. carlos obviously you've been dodging, you know, a lot of this is you're seeing the worst effects of this. what are you seeing right now? in st. petersburg >> we are in pinellas county, which has effectively been cut off from the mainland and that's because several bridges that connect pinellas county over to hillsborough county, which is the tampa area as well as braiding sent to the south. they have been closed because of the strong winds and all of the flooding associated with this storm. in fact, with this hurricane to the north of where we are right now at this hour, you can still see all of this water being pushed in from the gulf as well as the tampa bay. all of this is associated with that hurricane. were talking about at least four feet of storm surge earlier today. and we're told our meteorologist tell us that we could be getting a

derek, what are you seeing where you are? >> well, i'll be i'm going to be quite frank with you you know the fact that we're about 40 miles, 50 miles roughly west of where the most powerful part of hurricane helene is. and we're feeling these types of winds i'm i'm worried about what it's going to look like in the morning at first light across the big bend area, we know how powerful this storm is. and the most extreme part of the storm about to make landfall. i think it's important to put it into perspective for our viewers just from a meter the logical standpoint, hurricane ian in 2020 came ashore with a central pressure of 941 millibars. remember, a lower pressure means a stronger hurricane hurricane hunters now flying through the eye i'll have recorded reading submit 940 millibars. so the storm could be coming on onshore. more powerful than ian did when it came ashore. just south of fort myers there's so there's this extreme wind warning and i want to walk you through that because this is the national weather service reser

derek, what are things looking like there? >> yeah. i think it's important to note that this now is a major hurricane. this will be the fifth major hurricane to shift florida. florida in the past since 2017. so this is a significant developments. the hurricane hunters here finding winds near the surface strong enough to make that call to a category three storm. now, we're in franklin county here in apalachicola. we're facing a multitude of threats, storm surge warning. we have a hurricane warning in effect, but we also have a flash flood warning and also a tornado watch very near us. we've had over seven inches of rain in the past 36 hours. and this isn't even directly associated with hurricane helene. its tropical moisture surging north but the heaviest rain is still yet to come. i think once we look back at history books with this storm we're going to see that the catastrophic flood potential with it is going to be a big player. you can see on this map here the highlighted area and pink is known as a high risk from the weather predic

let's get straight to our meteorologist, the weatherman, derek van dam. derek, good morning. what are you looking at? >> good morning, kasie. if you recall, we talked about this storm late last week that at least the potential of a developing storm. and now we've learned some new information through the course of the weekend national hurricane center tagging this cluster of thunderstorms over the central and western caribbean with a invest, which means this isn't area of showers and storms that they're going to be monitoring the next couple of days for the potential of development. and you can infer a lot from this particular hashed area that's got a 90% chance of development over the next 70 days. look where it heads between the yucatan peninsula and cuba all the way into the central and eastern gulf of mexico. so all of our computer models honing in on a potential florida strike later this week that come thursday into friday. so this is the area we're monitoring now, but there has been a trend to shift that track a little further east overnight. of course, all the details n
