news4's derrick ward is live in prince george's county with more on why crews are doing all of >> reporter: indeed it is. it is all in the name of safety. what we're looking at down here is this tunnel. this is where all of the attention is being focused. there is a train there with mock victims on it and smoke in the tunnel. the firefighters you see standing about here are waiting to go in and meet some of these people when they're brought out. they took a cart down to get some of the passengers off and they try to make these things as real as possible so they've been throwing a little curve. the operators are told there is a passenger on board of the train in labor. the operator has to try to calm people and get them off safely. that is what this is all about. this is at the southern avenue metro station. right on the line of d.c. and maryland. you have prince george's county. probably mpd involved in this. that is what it is all about. the scenarios, to make sure that things are safe and as real world as possible. you have 100 to 150 volunteers who are involved in this. 150 volunteers a

news4's derrick ward is live in prince george's county with more on what crews are training >> reporter: good morning. this exercise is actually just starting to get under way. we're at the southern avenue metro stations. riding through here, you'll see a lot of the emergency responder presence and that is of course, all about this drill. they got 100 to 150 people, volunteers and first responders from metro, from prince george's county. even in sm from the district. various agencies taking part in this. what they're doing is undergoing smoke in a tunnel. they sent one train in and they're going to get emergency responders in here. it is all part of the drill. as we hear from prince george's county fire chief. there is one thing they're looking at. one thing in particular. >> absolutely. i mean, this quarterly drill program is important to the entire region and we try to spread it around. we had it at greenbelt and southern avenue. we're right on the border. the communication link between the district of something we're really interested in testing as well as getting people out of the t

case of a father charged with stabbing his two children inside their home in prince george's this afternoon. news 4 derrick ward was there and talked with family members today. he joins us with the story. >> reporter: at that court appearance the mother of the man who is accused of trying to kill his two kids made a plea for lennansy. she said that he's been a doting and devoted father to these kids and although they saw some signs never thought it would end up like this, that he would be in jail and charged with trying to kill his own two sons. he will remain in jail at least until his next court appearance after what happened in this district heights home saturday night, a violent tragedy played out in a family setting. >> i talked to christian yesterday. he said, mom, what did i do? >> reporter: police say he went after his two sons with a knife, they're 2 and 3 years old. they survived the attack at the hands of doing anything. that's how i know this is not him. he just lost it. >> reporter: family members say he had been spiraling downward. his job and relationship with the boys' mother and drug use c
