political director lisa desjardins reports. >> reporter: republicans fighting for south carolina have learned fast, the people of the palmetto state like to talk security. in columbia, former florida governor jeb bush's latest swing at donald trump was about readiness to command. >> i guess he think he can use his real estate skills to somehow magically bring to life the weapons system necessary to keep our war fighters safe, that magically we'll have an army of 490,000, that magically we'll find 15,000 more marines. >> reporter: for the moment, south carolina is the g.o.p. front line, with candidates in 13 different cities today, across a state with a huge veterans population and more than half a dozen military bases. as for frontrunner trump, he called up an iraq war veteran to the stage in north augusta today. this he's been after days of blasting bush's brother, former president george w. bush, for the war and for 9/11, and he did it again last night. >> ever ask yourself why his brother went silent for all these years? no, don't ask yourself that. >> reporter: and count ted cruz

. >> ifill: as we wait for voters to finally have their say, political director lisa desjardins joinshat she's watching for and what you, too, can watch for later tonight. lisa, what's your secret things of list you're wasmging for? >> i'm excited in realtime to sort out what's going on. i think this will bring together everything we've heard tonight. let's start with the republicans. if you look at a map of iowa, four basic areas to watch for republicans, areas -- >> ifill: look, we have a map of iowa! >> look at this! i love television. if we look in the upper northwest corner, that is a conservative hot bed, an area where you would expect ted cruz needing to do well. closer to des moines, areas are less conservative but there are more people and that's abarea where, say, mitt romney did well four years ago because he got a lot of people, they didn't feel strongly about him, but a lot showed up. this correlates, if you look at the political divide in the republican party, you see this conservative versus moderate trend in iowa. there you see in the brighter red kind of the mitt romn

political director lisa desjardins joins us to see what she is watching. of the early results. 29% for ted cruz coming in, only 18,000 votes, 41% of precincts reported but is he edging out donald trump. and the very close second actually marco rubio. we expected to see them to be bunched up at the top. on the democratic side of this, we're looking at hillary clinton who is narrowly leading bernie sanders with also about 41%, 61 pergs of precincts reporting. so we're curious, i'm curious. these are early going yet, lisa. what you have seen. about who is voting and what disirchtion that makes about what the trends are tonight. >> let's start with the republicans. those numbers that you saw, it's a close race. cruz out front early, not by much. maybe that is a disappointment for trump supporters but if you look at the map we made for tonight, g-wen, look at the upper northwest koarn, we're seeing something really interesting. there ted cruz is winning in that conservative slot, but number two, marco rubio. he's doing very well in one of those counties ben car
