diane roberts shows us his efforts to preserve till's legacy. patrick weems: the only version of civil rights i was taught was that rosa parks sat down, and martin luther king and everybody was free. diane: 30-year-old patrick weems grew up in mississippi. patrick weems: and it wasn't until i was 18 and i took a specific course on african-american studies that i learned about emmett till. when i learned about what happened, the injustices, but also that young people made change, it compelled me to want to be a part of that change, too. diane: determined, patrick set about the work of preserving the mississippi courtroom at the center of the story and the task of making amends. patrick weems: it was here in this courtroom that two men got off for murder. and so, we decided that we needed to begin by apologizing to the till family before we could begin with our museum. out of that apology, we decided to restore the courthouse back to the way it looked in 1955 and open up the emmett till interpretive center. diane: that was 10 years ago when, as a 20-year-old college student at ole miss, patrick took the lead in seeking racial reconciliation. patrick weems: so

in a single week you saw diane warwick, aretha franklin, martin luther king, bobby kennedy nitze russell diahann carroll lena horne and bill cosby. carson created an astonishing moment where african-americans could hearst forward into a cultural identity of their own and created an astonishing moment of opening white america's eyes to black culture and black politics on the show and on a timeslot that was generally treated as a lighthearted prelude. it seems to me only carson had the wisdom to appreciate how important that week was and the modesty to understand that he should be hosting the show when this message was being provided. years later whoopi goldberg used that programming is one of the key wake-up calls for white america. what she said on that show were we are here, where americans and we are part of this country. we aren't going anywhere. for those interested in the suite is an nbc documentary that i would recommend. now carson didn't stop there. in 1968 was about to get much worse. carson adjusted his programming in response to the tragic developments. martin luther king was
