diane sawyer was in afghanistan with the defense secretary recently. >> reporter: you said, mr. secretary, modest drawdown. the president said substantial drawdown. modest, significant? >> well, the question depends on what time frame you're using. and july is going to seem like a modest number. >> reporter: modest in the military's mind would be a few thousand troops, no more than 5,000. but with americans souring on the war, and bin laden now dead, some are calling for a much larger number. there are suggestions the president could settle on something as high as 15,000 troops. >> if we accelerate withdraw right now because we're war weary, we're going to lose this war. >> reporter: the administration admitted today it has been talking to the taliban for the past couple of weeks. secretary gates says he's concerned that the taliban won't get serious about peace talks until the winter, which is why he wants to keep the pressure on and the troop levels high. david? >> all right, david kerley at the white house tonight, thanks to you. i want to bring in our mike boettcher now who
