i am john dickerson. there is grim news this morning as the residents of london awoke to another terror attack on their city. the police believe the incident has been contained and say they shot and killed the suspects. we begin our coverage with cbs news correspondent elizabeth palm whore is at london bridge the scene of one of the attacks. liz. >> good morning, john. well, 16 hours in and the uk government has decided not raise the terrorist threat level to its highest notch that is critical. it is a very good indication that they do believe that they have managed to kill the three men who planned and executed these attacks. >> however, officers today have been raiding homes in the east end of the city, and have arrested 12 people so far who may have connections to the attacks. >> they started just after 10:00 last night with people around london bridge running for their lives. urged on by the police. the terrorists then, which they have used to mow down pedestrians on the bridge stood abandoned as secu

i am john dickerson. the trump family is off for their first weekend at camp david after an emotional week here in washington. there is good news this morning as congressman steve scalise's condition has been u upgraded fm critical to serious and she able to speak with his family. while the shooting dominated this week's headlines, it wasn't the only news. the president himself appeared to confirm his being investigated by the special counsel for possible obstruction of justice in a tweet. i am being investigated for firing the fbi director by the man who told me to fire the fbi director. witch-hunt. >> attorney general jeff sessions testified before the senate intelligence committee and pushed back against the suggestion of any wrongdoing. >> that i participated in any collusion, that i was aware of government to hurt this country, which i have served with honor for 35 years, or to undermine the integrity of our democratic process is an appalling and detestable lie. >> dickerson: deputy attorney general

i'm john dickerson. we're juggling two big stories today, but we begin with the investigation into russian efforts to influence the outcome of the 2016 election. this week homeland security officials told congress that the russians targeted voter databases in 21 states, and pbs news justice correspondent zoila peguero -- jeff pegues has learned nearly twice that has showed a brief. a obama administration attempt to combat russia interference, reporting that the administration knew as early as last august that vladimir putin had ordered the effort specifically to help defeat hillary clinton. the obama team included a number of package, including cyber bomb strikes, that ultimately they left behind for the trump administration. yesterday president trump launched several tweets criticizing the obama administration for inaction. he spoke about it in a fox news interview. >> well, i just heard today for the first time that obama knew about russia a long time before the election, and he did nothing about it. i

i am john dickerson. in washington this week it came down to credibility, with two very powerful men accusing each other of lying. >> i was honestly concerned he might lie about the nature of our meeting. some of the things he said just weren't true. >> >> dickerson: during thursday's blockbuster congressional hearing, the former fbi director testified under oath that the president told him he hoped he could drop the investigation into his former national security advisor general michael flynn. and asked him to pledge his loyalty. the next day in rose garden press conference president trump hit back. >> i didn't say that. so he lied about that? >> well, i didn't say that. i mean, i will tell you i didn't say that. >> dickerson: the president said he would be willing to repeat those statements under oath in front of the special counsel, and once again raised the prospect of audio recordings of his conversations with comey. >> do tapes exist of your conversations with him? >> well, i will tell you about tha

so, john dickerson, chief washington correspondent, a remarkable situation here, john. the president says that comey was lying under oath yesterday. comey has said that the president is lying. >> reporter: that's right. the president made that commitment, as you pointed out. 100% he said he would be willing the testify andpeak to the special counsel. the challenge with the president's comments about former director comey is he's kind of got one foot on the brake and one foot on the gas. on the one hand he said comey lied about those things, essentially, using his words from his tweet, and on the other hand he was so truthful he vindicated him. in fact, there is a way in which the president was helped by comey's testimony if you take out certain bits and makes the case the president wants. to he needs those things comey said to be truthful. so it's hard the say he was a liar and that he vindicated him. on the substance of the things going on outside of the james comey matter, the president finally said what he was supposed to say at that nato meeting, which is he support

we'll turn now to john dickerson, our chief washington correspondent and the anchor of "face the nation." john, the question that hangs over all of this is whether the president might have committed obstruct pressuring comey to drop the flynn investigation. >> we got a little clarity on that. the president wanted this cloud removed. that's kind of a vague statement, but comey said that he felt on the specific question of mike flynn that the president was asking him to end that investigation. the defense could be, well, the president didn't know, the president's state of mind is important on this obstruction question, but the fact that the president asked for private meetings to have these conversations leads some to believe that he knew what he was doing wasn't right, and comey will testify in his early meetings with the president, he said, "we're not supposed to be talking like this." and finally comey's firing. it's not just what he details in their opening statement. in their very first meeting the president talked about loyalty and whether he wanted to stay in the job. that relation

john dickerson, our chief washington correspondent and the anchor of "face the nation" is joining us right now. john, beyond the legal issues, there was a contest of character today between comey and the president. >> we mentioned those public approval numbers. that's about public opinion. as jan said, it's ultimately politicians who will make the determination here. the public puts pressure on them. how does the public know who's telling the truth? well, whose character do they judge is better? so this was a question of the president's character versus james comey's character and want white house and republican allies are attacking comey before he even opened his mouth saying that he was a showboat. the democrats had criticized him before he became their here oh, that he hurt the f.b.i. when hillary clinton's campaign did a version of that during the campaign, mike pence, then-governor of the indiana called it the politics of personal destruction. as we heard, comey had his own character claims to make about the president, said it's in his nature to lie. but 10 at the end of the day

john dickerson, what did you make of this two and a half-hour hearing? >> there are three elements to this investigation. the first is did the russians try to meddle in the elections, and that's something the president said might be true or might not be, might be the chinese or some hacker. attorney general sessions came down on the side the russians did it and this is an important thing to find out. the second part is was there ans very strong. that's where he gave his most forceful defenses of himself, saying the third meeting with the russians is basically nothing. where he got quite murky is the question of obstruction of justice, flnls by the president, either in firing james comey or anything else regarding this investigation. in all of that, he basically punted on those questions saying the president might exert executive privilege and he wasn't going to answer. >> pelley: now, let's look just briefly at what the attorney general said at the beginning of the hearing in his forceful defense of his own actions. >> i have never met with or had any co
