chance that disney plus will swing to profitability. want to look at the succession plans for bob iger. we got clear succession plans from berkshire hathaway. bob iger has returned to disney again. what do you see when it comes to succession? >> i think it's going tor be a very hard decision for bob iger to step aside another time. you look at the second term for bob iger and it has been a mixed result. if he had not come back after his first stint in the top role, we would have been heralding a fan tastic vision toward streaming. nelson peltz has been trying to take back the direction of disney back to the pre-streaming vertical which bob iger has responded against and proactive in making sure that disney stays on track. the challenge is finding someone else who has that similar commitment to the future. rather than stay in the past and commit to the digital future and use the assets. the the in real life assets. these will be growth areas. someone who understands how to harness the theme park business and real-life assets and internat

for disney go post-peltz fight?, one point i would make is peltz is still hovering out there. i mean, this proxy fight is over, but he's still in the stock, and he says that he's closely monitoring the situation, which by the way i think is good for disney shareholders, keeps the pressure on a little bit to deliver the cost cuts that disney has said it's going to deliver. but that aside, first start with streaming, that's where the main interest is going to be here, whether they're on target to turn a profit by the end of the year. and, you know, my sense is, they should be able to make money at this. i mean, they've got, if you count hulu, they're up to 200 million subscribers and we see it, netflix has 270 which is better but netflix that has healthy margins, why doesn't disney? they've either got to lower costs or boost revenue. on the cost side one thing i'll be looking for is, they still are benefiting from the strikes and the fact that they were forced to stop spending. and everybody in hollywood is telling me

disney's streaming business will turn profitable in the future. concerns about the succession plan. just a question about the stock. does most of the investors believe that nelson peltz is right about a lot of his concerns? how do you interpret this reaction? >> you know, we have to remember where the stock has come from. you know, it was doing really well going into the most recent earnings report and kind of up to where it seems that peltz and trian held their shares. start of the year, it was $90 a share. it got up to $122 a share. that is about where peltz sold. great trade. nothing against what they're doing. we had a big move. we had a big move off the fairly low level of the stock. at some level, it seems convenient to say nelson peltz sold at $120 and since he lost the proxy battle in april, the stock pulled back. maybe that means something. we think it is more of a reflection of the run the stock had over a short period of time. it was oversold. they had a couple of good quarters. they are taking profits out. it support 30% year over year

tom: disney's cfo speaking to bloomberg. was bring in charlie wells from the team.he results topline for the quarter was a beat but the shares were hammered. what was the investor reaction, where is the fear situated in this stock? >> yesterday was trouble not in the house of mouse, but around it, actually it was a solid second-quarter earnings report for this company. one thing to focus on was disney plus, which is that all-important streaming platform for them, that was profitable for the first time ever. streaming had other challenges around it in other units but disney plus was profitable. what investors are honing in on in the negative sense was the potential for softer growth in the streaming in the current quarter, as well as subdued growth and visitors to it's very important theme parks. tom: the theme park seeming to normalizes the way they characterized it. the reason we are interested in disney apart from the components of the business is the broader gauge on the u.s. consumer. we need to know how the u.s. consumer is holding up. do we have a broader read

skeptic as you know and the markets has gotten excited about disney sub numbers. i'm usually pointing out that there is another story there that isn't so rosy on this quarter, i think the market is being far too skeptical relative to disney performance. i actually think this was a very good quarter, setting up a good year you're looking at a year that is going to have 25% eps growth, 8 billion or more in free cash flow, and streaming profitability. and i think that sets things up pretty well for them and i think it is meaningful that disney plus and hulu together are profitable when you take espn plus out of the equation contrast that with warner, that in order for streaming to be profitable, it has to put its hbo cable and satellite business into the streaming numbers to claim profitability. i think here to your point, though, about the whole game is can streaming profitability make up for the continued precipitous decline of linear? and the whole question there is can this streaming business scale? and i think what analysts have missed here is a major milestone

we are watching disney shares, dragging down the dow and on pace for the worst day in 18 months. that follows arnings julia has the details. >> reporter: disney shares are down over 9% after they said it's parts divisions are operating income would be flat in the fiscal third quarter. that compares to expectations of double-digit percentage gains in the quarter and they say that would be a head of a fiscal quarter for rebound expected. bernstein saying parkes is the anchor of the evaluation, plus the quarterly revenue is lighter than expectations and disney set its direct to consumer entertainment business would report a loss in the fiscal third quarter and would not add any new subscribers while the quarter two linear television operating income fell 22% and that was the bad news which outweighed the fact that disney be on the bottom line and raised the full-year earnings outlook and reported a surprise warty $7 million in profits for disney+ and hulu. iger said streaming will be a growth driver for the company as a crackdown on password sharing but that is not helping the stock
