your driver, well, probably dmv.ng for summer surge as drivers realize they need that real dmv. pete suratos joins us live from san francisco with the details on why there's this big concern. good morning, pete. >> good morning, laura. the big concern for dmv is meeting the demand. the idea is people wait until the last minute to get the real id before 2020. let's go ahead and talk about the numbers according to dmv as far as who has their real id. according to dmv, they are saying just over 10 of all california drivers have their real id. of course you'll need that id to board airplanes or enter federal facilities also you have a passport. there's fear by dmv they may not meet the demand in california as they currently issue 300 to 400,000 a month and expect that number to jump in the near future to 500 to 600,000 cars. per month. that's why they are expecting a summer surge, that's what they are calling it, of long linings at the dmv as people wait to the last minute to get the id before the 2020 deadline. long lin

there is no line going out the door of this dmv office. but in a newly released report from state auditors, they concluded that over the past year, the dmv has been unprepared for all of the drivers who went to get updated real ids. the drivers licenses that are federally approved that you need to travel across the u.s. and a couple of years. auditors say that the surging demand is part of the reason customers face long lines getting anything done at the dmv laster. the audit found the dmv had a long list of problems from poor staffing, service windows, to lack of employee training and outdated computers. internet connection issues also led to the long wait times. the head of the dmv says that the agencies worked hard to make improvements since late last year. the average wait time is about 30 minutes. republican state lawmakers are skeptical of that claim. some say their experience it now is far better than it was last year. >>> the system was down and we were waiting in line for hours. i was here for maybe four hours in total. people had

tom baker headed to some bay area dmv offices today to see if the dmv delivers on its promised improvements reporter: to get a real id, californians must go into dmv offices, bringing several required proof of identity documents. after october 1, 2020, airport security checkpoints will not accept california's drivers licenses without the special markings mandated by the federal government. the dmv officials had years to prepare, it started making the idea a priority only months before a rollout in 2018 which created an ability to create appointments as well as long lines. indeed, last year, antagonizing weights of 2 to 3 hours were not uncommon even with those welcome. auditors found several major problems, lack of employee training, and inadequate service window staff, ineffective indications, poor budgeting, and an inability to improve customer services. dmv officials are now required to submit a detailed -- plans within 60 days. the plans must be updated every six months until the problem is resolved. commenting on the audit, acting dmv director kathleen webb wrote that the dmv is commit
