cnbc's dom chu is in the news room with what we can expect. hey,dom. >> melissa, traders getting ready to kick off another earnings season, that time of year again. the early part of the season dominated by the financials. this time around traders aren't expecting fireworks. here's what we're talking about. shares of citigroup as we head toward the earnings. the options market currently pricing in an implied move of around 3.1%. versus an average one-day stock move for citi around earnings closer to 3.5%. jpmorgan chase expected to move by around 2.4%. the average there post earnings is 2.7% less volatile there, as well. embattled lending giant, wells fargo, could move by around 2 or 4% up or down. the average move 3.5%. and regional bank pnc. a 1.8% move up or down. the average is 2.9%. there are a number of reasons we could see less volatility. among them, bank stocks laggard's pretty much all year, aren't viewed as a compelling story up or down. also the idea that more clarity on the future direction of interest rates will be needed before

back over to you guys. >> thanks, dom. so, dan, how are you playing the banks? >> on friday morning you're going to have citi bank, j.p. morgan, pnc and wells fargo all report q3 earnings. that's almost 30%. just remember the rates have been taken down there, other than berkshire, this is a pure play banking etf right now. dom just mentioned the banks showed pretty good relative strength, why have they showed relative strength? the yield on the ten year was up 15 bits. the likelihood of a rate increase in november has dropped to about 17%. that might have been baked in, that might have been the move that we saw in yields over the last couple weeks or so. i don't find the banks particularly interesting. didn't jamie diamond call in to your show earlier in the week and stick his neck out for john stump? he's a good trader. he bought that stock? february, genius. if i'm looking out to next week, i know there's a volatility with deutsche bank and interest rates. i may think of hedging the bank stocks that i own. there's the chart right there. 19 is a very big suppor

dom. >> currency traders have been paying attention, scott.hers haven't noticeds the green back has momentum behind it. the dollar index continues to move higher and hit highs we haven't seen since early february. there are a number of factors at apply, of course, including bets on a possible interest rate rise, u.s. economic activity, the election, you name it. a lot of that stuff playing in. but over the last month, we have seen the value of that dollar index rise by over 3%. so we asked our data partners over at ken shoe to look at 2005 where the dollar index rose by 3% or more in a similar time frame and what stocks tend to do in results. so among the best performers, auto suppliers retailer o'reilly automotive gains an average of 3%, positive 76% of the time during that span. you've also got edwards life sciences, which has an average gain of around 3.5%. it's been a positive trade around 65% of the time. and then one of the top performers is monster beverage, which has gained an average of 6.2% to positive trade 81% of the time. that's a

. >> thanks,dom. and get your shows right.nd. >>> so what's a good way to protect yourself from more losses as we head into earnings season? dan is at the smart board with our "call to action." what are you looking at? >> i want to look at mcdonald's but first talk about using a collar. this is a strategy you use against a stock you are long, that you're looking for protection. you don't want to sell the stock, but you don't want to also just be long premium against that stock. if you do that too frequently, that's just going to whittle away at your performance. so let's go to the playbook, let's talk about what a collar is. it's essentially against a long stock position, selling out of the money call and using the proceeds to buy an out of the money put. creating what we would call a collar. why do you want to do that? well, you're cautious, near-term. you don't want to sell your stock. in the case of mcdonald's, for instance, going to pay a 94-cent dividend on november 29th, they have earnings coming up next week. the stock
