someone with lots in all that it competes to take part in this sport, dominique dawes. u.s. in 1996, and she is the first black gymnast to win an individual olympic medal in women's gymnastics. dominique, it's great to have you with us. thank you for your time. i know these olympic games are unlike any other with every nation around the globe still grappling with the pandemic and the aftermath of it. talk about what it's like to perform at this level without the support systems athletes like yourself and others rely on when you're training, the fans cheering you on, your family and your support system at the games. >> you would have to definitely ask these athletes that are there in tokyo at this moment. in barcelona, spain, when i was 15 years old competing, there were sold-out crowds. at the atlanta games there were 50,000 people and billions of people watching. 2000 olympics in sydney, australia, again, sold-out crowd. i cannot envision what these athletes are enduring while the crowds add to the adrenaline rush and excitement, they do add a great deal of pressure. b

here to discuss this, olympic gymnast dominique dawes. thank you so much.st anyone can what simone is going through now. what do you think she's dealing with? >> oh, the mental blocks are real as you're preparing for such an enormous gymnastics competition, you're dealing with the pressure, things going on with your personal life and the only survivor on the 0 floor. more than sports, she's trying to change the generation and culture in the sport of gymnastics, a lot of pressure and her difficulty level is extremely challenging, extremely high and the caliber of her skills are quite dangerous. so, dealing with a mental block during an olympic games would be a nightmare. charles: of course, the only survivor you're referring to, the sexual assaults committed by the former team doctor. the twisties, explain what that is? >> well, the twisties, back in the day when i competed, which was 29 years ago in 1992 for my first olympic games, i can't believe it's been that long, the twisties are when you get lost in mid air and you're flipping and trying to twist. bac
