i'm don lemon. the white house tonight circling the wagons, saying the story is false, but two former officials knowledgeable about the situation tell cnn that the main points of the story first reported by the "washington post" are true, the president shared classified information with the russian foreign minister. and make no mistake about this, this story is a bombshell. it goes way beyond partisan politics in general. lives are at stake around the world and that raises two frightening and very serious questions. is a president who would do this even unwittingly, competent to be the commander in chief? is president trump up to the job? we'll discuss all of that tonight. i want to get right now to cnn's david chalian, jim sciutto, david gergen, and sara murray. and cnn political and national security analyst, david senger. jim sciutto, what are you hearing from intelligence forces about the president and the russians inside the oval office? >> two officials knowledgeable of it tell cnn, "the post"

let's take a look at it don. it says while i greatly appreciate you informing me on three separate occasions that i am not under investigation, i nevertheless concur with the judgment of the department of justice that you are not able to effective lead the bureau. now, all of in is coming -- the white house is explaining the firing because the director of the fisher had lost the confidence of the bureau. he said the deputy attorney general and the attorney general made this recommendation to the president. but in their memorandums and letters that they sent out here paul of them are talking about the clinton investigation, the 2016 campaign. they say director comey did not handle himself properly in that investigation. in the president's letter he does not mention the clinton controversy campaign one time. he brings up his own investigation, the russia investigation trying to make a point on that. don, this is not the end of the story. it seems it's the beginning of yet another chapter in washington, another cont

don? >> so, again, he -- in his role, he -- it would be normal for him to take notes, yet he said he wanted to do this, taking notes because he wanted to memorialize these specific events to this case? >> right. so comey is someone who has -- he likes to keep a paper trail. that is sort of historically what he's done, but sources i've been speaking with said it was not typical for him to document every single conversation he had with a high level official like he did with one-on-one conversations with donald trump, but he felt it was important enough to memorialize that and keep track of it in case something happened down the road, and he also shared with a close circle of friends, one source spoke with said he used close friends as a sounding board after the conversations he would have with the president, called them up and used them as a sounding board to relay what he wrote in the mememo, did it right after the conversations to include the good, bad, the crowd sizes in the inauguration,
