theories like qanon and donie, what are they telling you about finally seeing this moment that theyought would actually never come true? >> reporter: hey, brooke, yeah, i mean, some of these qanon followers are in absolute shock today taking to online forums to express the fact that they're coming to the realization that they have been duped. i mean, many of these people believed the election was stolen. many of these people believed and were told for years that trump was one day going to round up all the so-called members of the deep state and many of them also believed even up until inauguration day that biden wouldn't be inaugurated. in fact, i met one trump su supporter who was streaming live on youtube in the early hours of inauguration day morning and he was convinced because there was this qanon conspiracy theory going around that trump would instate martial law in the united states which would stop the inauguration of joe biden. i spoke to him before the inauguration. i also spoke to this trump supporters after biden was sworn in. have a listen. >> i don't believe -- this so

cnn's donie o'sullivan is there with in washington. what's the situation?: yeah, alisyn, as you mentioned 25,000 national guardsmen. miles and miles of fenced barbed wire and, of course, amit fresh concerns that the government and other people here might have ties to extremist groups, given what we saw at the capitol a couple weeks ago in that insurrection. 12 members of the national guard have been taken off of inauguration duty ages part of that vetting process. it is all coming, of course, after the insurrection a couple weeks ago which all from conspiracy theories from the president of the united states. this is not what a peaceful transition of power normally looks like, but it is the result of a president and presidency which was stoked in extreme rhetoric, violent rhetoric and conspiracy. john. >> and the important thing the violence will not stop the transfer of power. it failed. i think that's important to remember this morning, as we watch history unfold before our eyes, donie o'sullivan, thank you so much for being there. >>> i want to talk about

donie o'sullivan, thank you. >> our legal analyst, asha rangappa.people and the beliefs of people don't go away after the president is out of office. and maybe they're more emboldened. what is fbi job number one? >> you know, we do what we did after 9/11. we make this a priority. there are challenges for the fbi when it comes to investigating domestic terrorism. when you're facing externally, you know, foreign threat, you know, you have, first of all, additional agencies that can help, for example, cia, nsa, they can collect abroad. and you have screening mechanisms for people, you know, coming into the country. and then you have legal tools in the united states, things like the fisa, the foreign information surveillance act. those things are not available when dealing with a terrorist attack. so the challenge is you should do you act preemptively when you're still in the planning stages -- because obviously if you reacted or waited until the event has occurred you're too late. but that's going to be the challenge for the fbi. >> you know, when you

dony you have a different view? i think we are getting close to our time together. anything else you want to share? there was a case in which you argued against me which you said use all the justices we had some pretty heated caseses over the years, the affordable care act as well. it's important for folks to know we are good friends and that's one of the things i love about you and georgetown is we can be on opposite sides of really hard stuff but respect the person on the other side making the argument because the profession at the end of the day is all about precisely that. thank you for your service to georgetown as well as a great person and colleague. this is very kind of you. i would say the lessons to be learned in arguing cases against peoplet and having the perspective that we both care deeply about this both helping the court in the long run get to the right answer by presenting the best possible argument i think helped keep the focus where it should be and allow folks like us to be very good friends even though we sometimes end up on the opposite side. t
