doreen gentzler has this story of battling paralysis. >> reporter: there were no symptoms. nothing at all unusual. just an ordinary day for megan silcot who was then 16 years old. but for some reason on that day, her immune system decided to wage war on her own body. >> i was terrified. i didn't really know what was happening. i didn't have any type of movement through my toes all the way up to my arms. i had some movement in my left arm, but none in my right. >> reporter: doctors told her she had developed adem. it's a condition believed to be caused by a virus that triggers the immune system to attack the tissue surrounding the spinal cord. when that tissue is damaged, the brain can't transmit signals to the rest of the body telling it how and where to move. so patients are paralyzed. >> what we see is devastating. >> reporter: this doctor specializes in spinal cord jurs at the kennedy krieger institute in baltimore. she says many patients who develop adem get better on their own. but in about 1/3 of the cases including megan's there are major neurologic consequences. >>

>> jim and doreen we want to get right to that picture and what jumps out is a neck tattoo. this is 20-year-old isaiah bogan. police tell us this is the man who sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl in a forestville apartment building last week. her mother actually helped police i.d. bogan. she spotted him last friday, tried to tackle him but he got away. she told police about the tattoo that reads blessed. police say bogan followed the little girl on to an elevator. when she got out investigators say bogan forced her to the ground and sexually assaulted her. it appears bogan lives in that apartment complex where that attack occurred. until now the only evidence we'd seen in that case was surveillance video, but, again, tonight, prince george's county police has an arrest warrant out for isaiah bogan. if you know where he is you're urged to call police and we'll have more information on our nbc news washington app and tomorrow morning on today. >> another search going on this one for a murder suspect. >> fire fighters found mother dead in her forestville apartment on sunday.

. >> reporter: doreen more than 12 hours after this happened there's still a lot going on here.. right now it is not safe for rescue fire fighters to go inside there to try to get to the area where dogs trained to detect human remains and made what officials call a possible alert earlier today. tractor trailer loads of material have been brought in to shore up the damaged building. the work will continue throughout the night until the multi-story parking garage at watergate complex is stable enough for fire fighters to enter and search for a possible victim. this photo taken a few minutes after the collapse shows the roof of the garage which had dirt piled on it as part of a landscaping job under construction. workers scraped how a roughly 40 x 40 foot section of the roof pancaked down through three layers of the garage this morning. photos showed dozens of vehicles that were damaged by tons of falling concrete. part of the complex was evacuated while the damage was assessed. two construction workers received minor injuries. officials say all of them are accounted for. but the g
