at the core of this was douglas macarthur. one of the first things the national guard is vying for is the right for the first group over to france. they want to send an american expeditionary force. rather than have a state division like pennsylvania, new york -- rather than giving one state the whole thing, they created an amalgamation of states. as many as they could put into one infantry division. they ended with 26 states and the district of columbia represented in this division. it was known as the 42nd division. they were trying to think of a nickname. he said it will stretch like a rainbow across the country. so it was the 42nd rainbow division. the 42nd division fought in world war i, world war ii, and remains on the books today. douglas macarthur, because he was perfectly situated, appoints himself colonel and chief of staff of the 42nd division. he will end up being chief of staff and he will later command the 84th brigade, one half of the division during world war i in combat. at the end and for the occupation of ge

west point was greatly formative for douglas macarthur. in 1962, he said that his credo had been duty, honor, and country. west point really influenced macarthur until his last days. in many different ways. obviously through education. he had one of the most outstanding academic records in the history of west point. first captain in his class. highest-ranking cadet officer in his class. one thing that really drove home for him was the idea that the way to become a good leader and a good soldier was on the athletic field. you learn things like discipline and leadership. his first leadership role had been in high school as quarterback of the high school football team. he managed the football team in 1904. when he was there, one of his players was joseph stillwell who also was the one that brought basketball to west point. but arthur also played baseball. one thing we have on display is the box score from the first time the naval academy played the west point academy. west point versus annapolis. in left field and adding second is douglas maca

douglas macarthur. they come back to the u.s. for some time in the spring of 1937. by this douglas' mother had point, died. she is buried in the arlington cemetery next to her husband. while there, on the last day of april, in new york city, they get married. they returned to the philippines. and as far as he is concerned, he is not going back to the u.s. manila is home. he has a penthouse there. he is working for his good friends. working for the president of the philippine government, quezon. in february 1938, the couple has a child. arthur macarthur, the fifth. born february 20th, 1938. his godparents are the president of the philippines and his wife. if you think about that in the late 1930's, to have ethnic godparents for an american child was quite a statement about where arthur is on racial issues. macarthur moves everything to manila. library, father's library, father's uniforms and medals. everything. he is not going back but the state intervenes. the japanese are activating and becoming more expansionist. with the fall of france in 1940, there is some weakn

macarthur on a tour. she was something of the first lady of japan. douglas did not leave tokyo that much. she would travel the country and was a tremendous goodwill ambassador between the american occupiers and the japanese. goings general macarthur to his limo after a day at work. trying to japanese get a glimpse of the great general macarthur. every january 26, on macarthur's birthday, a group of japanese would sing happy birthday with the rising sun and u.s. flags, which, if you think about it, was completely unthinkable. it says something about how the country converted and the extent of the occupation. baseball items here. macarthur reintroduced baseball to the islands. really made it a very popular game. this gives you a sense of japan under macarthur in the late 1940's. the connection that is made here remains strong between the united states and japan. douglas macarthur is the most famous non-native in those countries. what i am going to show you illustrates exactly what i am talking about. one of the things to keep in mind is that, in the cultures sacarthur is working in, gift to

on that day 71 years ago, general douglas macarthur, who had been appointed supreme allied commanderf the allied forces in the pacific assembled representatives of the nine nations aboard the battleship missouri in tokyo bay to witness the foreign minister of japan and the senior general from the imperial headquarters to sign the surrender document. this marked the formal end of the war with japan that began on december 7th, 1941 when the japanese attacked pearl harbor and other military installations in that area. on december 8th, 1941, president roosevelt addressed a joint session of congress. i shall never forget his opening remarks. yesterday december 7th, 1941, a date that will live in infamy. these words are engraved on the walls of this memorial. it was a long road from pearl harbor to tokyo. 3,854 miles requiring three years and eight months for u.s. forces to reach their final destination, but we were not alone. the armed forces of australia, the armed forces of new zealand, and the british airborne task force supported us throughout the war in the pacific. i would like to s
