the downtown area turned into what can only be described as a war zone. there were about 800 people marching when it turned into chaos. official say the intent of the shooters was to kill as many police officers as possible. demonstrators marching not far from city hall ran for their lives as dos of shots rang out. police say this was a coordinated attack. there is also video that shows one shooter randomly firing a rifle over and over towards unseen targets. police used their patrol cars for cover as they moved in to help wounded officers. the search for the gunman moved through downtown from buildings to restaurants, business, and hotels. dallas mayor mike rawlings spoke early and he talked about just the dedication of the men and women who were out here, as police officers and the distress the devastation the city is going through. jeff? >> thank you, manuel bojorquez, from dallas. >>> we are waiting for the president to speak about what happened in dallas last my. he is in warsaw, poland. this is to address the police shootings that happened in baton

but we are in the heart of downtown dallas.nd me the streets where the protests began, and then ended. it started at 7:00 and went until 9:00. you had about 800 people or so and right after the organizers of the protests told everyone to disperse that it was over, time to go, after a peaceful protest suddenly, of course, we heard the shots ring out. i have a couple of witnesses. we've been talking to many witnesses all night. this is the walker family. a father and son who were there at the time. for you, what was the most terrifying part about all of it? >> well, the most terrifying part was us being separated, and not knowing where the bullets was coming from. and seeing an officer just drop right in front of you. they were there to support us, so as you said -- >> they were helping us. >> so they didn't have riot gear on. they was there, it was a peaceful march, and a guy just pulled up and started mowing down officers. >> the irony of all of this, of course, is that it was a protest about officer-involved shootings. you you

i mean, downtown dallas is a place where there are condos and people live in downtown. you're there. what were police telling you when this was happening. they were concerned there was bombs throughout the core there. >> they were. it was unnerving because the suspect stated there were explosives. they were telling everybody to stay off the streets, stay inside if you didn't have to be in downtown especially that core around where this is going on but again, that was only four blocks away and it was extremely unnerving for everybody, even people inside their homes didn't quite know what to do and interesting, george, that has lasted even into today. we now know the outcome of this but people were still nervous today. >> you know, one thing i noticed and texas is home so it's interesting to come back into the state and hear these conversations. people talking directly about what happened but also trying to find some common ground. have you seen that? >> yeah, i actually have. i've seen people trying to make sense of what happened, which i don't know that there is anyway

it's right there downtown blocks away from the shooting there. we worked, of course, extensively with dallas p.d. we had a lot of dallas p.d. officers on our task forces, and they worked the violent crime in the city with us. you know, we were trying to help them. of course they were a larger force than we were. but we targeted, you know, gun violence. that was atf's mission. of course, the bombs. we'd work with them constantly. we knew their command staffs. we met with them all the time. they're just one of the top police forces in the world. their tactical team, we had a special relation with them. our -- atf's special response team, which is a s.w.a.t. team, one of our teams is based in dallas. they work regionally, and they have a very close representative working with the dallas p.d. s.w.a.t. and the fbi has an enhanced s.w.a.t. in their larger division. they have what is called an enhanced s.w.a.t. so those teams like fbi, s.w.a.t., atf special response team, called srt, dallas p.d. s.w.a.t., and all the cities around there that have s.w.a.
