clark counties. and rightly so... those two counties hold the majority of the state's population. but there's a different dynamic between the caucus and the election... giving the rurals more of a voice. ... dr. eric herzik.. chair of the political science department at unr says during the general election. .... the rurals get washed out by washoe and clark counties....but during the caucuses...the rurals are more important.... he says if a candidate can sway the rural counties... they can pick up a block of support in the caucus. the caucuses will have very low participation rates. if they get 20% they are happy. so caucus attendees do get a louder voice in selecting the nominee and on the republican side in particular the louder voice is in the rural counties where you have higher turn out and more republicans even though among the state's entire but he says even though very few democratic votes come out of the rurals and they likely won't win there during the general election.... the democrats can use them to gain momentum in the caucuses and help secure the party nomination.... in 2008... president obama used the rurals to his advantage... beating clinton in nine of the 14 rural counties

dr. eric herzik.. chair of the political science department at unr says during the general election. .... the rurals get washed out by washoe and clark counties....but they play a bigger role in a caucus... the rurals are overwhelimingly republican and have a higher voter turnout meaning more participants per capita. and it gives them a louder caucus voice. historically... democrats don't do well in the rurals... however.. dr. herzik says they can be used to a candidate's secure a party nomination.... just like 2008 in terms of the caucus, president obama rather smartly even though the number of votes coming out of there is quite small. but you got a disproportionate weight so even though he lost the overall count it actually gave him a boost in the number of committed delegates. that's just a quirck in the democratic caucus rules. he says democrats can expect to lose the rurals during the general election.. when the caucus is done.... he says both democrats and republicans will focus their attention on getting high voter turnout in clark and washoe when it comes time to elect the next president... and a reminder... the democrats wil
