dr. marshall. >> [inaudible] and i always say since i'm not running for anything i can say the politically unpopular things. i mean as far as i am concerned the easier part of this is going to be ramping up the enforcement because that's really -- i mean and now you know the revenue generating side and the department and i think that enforcement piece and i guess it goes back to -- let me talk about the pedestrian piece because i'm a pedestrian. obviously all three and bicycles and pedestrians and i don't know what happened since i have been a kid and safety first and people don't even -- i watch people and -- make because i learned look both ways when you cross a street when a kid. i don't think people think about that anymore. i am serious. forget the folks who decide to take on -- i'm not even talking about 45, 55 miles per hour driver. i'm talking about 10 miles per hours and bull and mad torwith someone crossing the street and ridiculous. and the eye contact. it's all gone now. i am surprised if more people don't get killed and i don't know if that campaign needs to come back and 50%

dr. marshall for the omega one. i think we took in as many guns as any other agency and i think that makes a difference. there was a 30% homicide reduction from last year to this year; although i appreciate clyde's comment that 48 is a good total. it's not a good total if you're anybody that knew somebody that suffered from gun violence last year let a known murdered. i think we have been successful because we have tripled the clearance rate over what it was in 2007 so the message to those that do gun violence in san francisco let alone homicide and you will go to jail and be prosecuted so hopefully that leaves the city a safer place. i am making use of technology even though we're down officers and the partnerships and the mayor's jobs during the summer has left us with quieter summer for kids and the focus is on positive activity and marching towards a stage for high school graduation and being college or job ready at this point. i think it makes a big difference. so far we had one homicide on the sixth and on mar

dr. marshall. >> yeah, my comment is obviously it's a great piece. thank you. i would like everybody to see it because i don't think anybody has any idea of the situations that officers walk into. that's some stuff, really. those that work in the community and kind get this stuff all the time, but when we hear -- when we talk about officers dealing with homeless situations and these situations that's not easy stuff to do, so i think it's really good not only for the obvious purposes but also to let folks see just what the officers walking into routinely. i mean this is a routine situation and training and sensitivity to deal with these situations. i mean obviously there is the language barriers but just the situations -- and these are family members. these are close relationships so i think it would surprise a lot of people when they watch what the officers are dealing with on a daily basis. they know about the homicides and this and that but i don't think they know about this situation and i think it's a great job showing that. >> thank you. >> ms. frankel. >>

dr. marshal. we're all in this together. as i said, 97 percent of the tickets went to cars and it's probably not going to shake out like that. we'll try to do fair and equitable enforcement and treating everybody equally realizing that the cars are the most dangerous. so they're going to catch the most ticket. >> thank you chief. and know that we at the board also have to put our money where our mouth is so you, i think, have a commitment from the supervisors that we'll make sure you have the resources to do that's being asked of the police department and also the officer of citizens complaints. if i can take a motion to file this item and i want to reserve the possibility of coming back jointly in the very near future to see where things are. motion to file by supervise yee. and we'll take that without objection. mr. clerk, do we have any other business before this joint committee? >> mr. chair that concludes this meeting. >> thank you. the meeting is adjourned and let's keep each other and all of us safe out there. thank y

good folks at heritage, jennifer marshall, senator jim demint, appreciate y'all's hospitality very much today. we will be talking about "prodigal press." as john said, dr. marvin olasky wrote this book originally 25 years ago, and it's been widely used in college classrooms around the country, but much has happened in the past 25 years. the 24/7 news cycle that john referred to is, of course, facilitated at least in part by the internet. when the original book, "prodigal press" was written and published in 1980, the internet, i'm fond of saying, was merely a gleam in al gore's eye at that time. since then, of course, the internet is really driving what happens in the news cycle. so we felt like it was due for an update. we started working on this book about three years ago, and it was just published in september. we've been delighted by the reception of the book so far, and what i'm going to do today is to just share with you some of the ideas that are in this book. want to talk a little bit about world news group just to kind of give you an idea of who we are even though john did a great job of setting me up on that score. and also i want to be really
