dr. martin luther king jr. was a pastor who is voice inspired countless souls to fearlessly stand up and speak truth in the face of injustice and discrimination. in fact a recorded history, but particularly this past half century we've revealed that the tongues of clergy like dr. king have consistently spoken out in issues of discrimination, race, poverty and domestic disparity, immigration, and yes, sexual orientation. they dared to challenge society's conscience on all rights. it is dr. kings inspires that led to these decisions, presidential and executive orders and concongressional and equality. the hero awards are living and profound symbols of this tradition. remind us that we here today are stewards of that great legacy, but more importantly that our collective work to advance human and civil rights is far from accomplished. today's historic observance is also a reminder to those of us in our commission to honor those 5 decades of service and accomplishments of the san francisco human rights commission i

dr. martin luther king and i was actively involved in the civil rights movement. when the vietnam war started, i joined the anti-vietnam war movement. i became a member of the eipj - the entertainment industry for peace and justice and worked alongsid donald sutherland and jane fonda and in 1972, i became a mcgovern delegate to the democratic national convention in miami beach. in the 1970s when the movement began to get redress and an apology for that incarceration of japanese americans, i joined in with that as well. i testified at the congressional commission gathering information on the internment. i was involved in all the civil rights and social justice advocacy campaigns except for one issue that was organic to me. that was an immutable part of me from the time i was a young boy, i knew i was different in ways more than my asian face. the other boys would say, "monica is hot." [laughter] sally is cute. i thought monica and sally were nice -- [laughter] but bobby was exciting. [laughter] when ever he came near me or talked to me, my heart started to pound. t

people that will join me at some point include martin luther king iii who was inspired by the examples set by his father drking jr. who moved into a chicago apartment himself 47 years ago. my new neighbors were gracious and welcoming. and i look forward to working with them on national problems, because as chicago turns it around, it can be a model for every city and village in this country. we need to know about the people in the trenches that are working every day mentoring young people, talking to them. we need to know about poverty and how that becomes something that creates a climate of desperation. and how we must challenge young people to rise above those that have no expectations for them. i spent this weekend talking with those in the trenches that are willing to fight and that are getting results. and i want to highlight them and put a national limelight on it. i talk a lot about renewing our cities and the power of activism in my new book

dr. martin luther king in 1958 and that is his introduction to the civil rights movement. you know about those persons but you don't know about people like claudette carver and many others. if there had been no claudette carver who had not done what she did on the second of march in 1956, rosa parks may not have done what she did on december 1st, 1955, if she had not been arrested, there would be no trial, there would be no meeting at home street baptist church. and in that community, the state, the nation and the world's, the whole history of the civil rights movement, and for claudette, there are many individuals in the civil rights movement whose face is never appear on television, whose names never appear in print, but they are the ones who make it possible to do that. i am happy and i am delighted that i was able to represent a lot of those, not only thinking the world for voting but returns and recreation with farm subsidies. and more lawsuits than any other living lawyer that has resulted in changing things. happy to be part of it. and history needs to be preserved.
