dr. martin luther king jr., we return to the small alabama city that became one of dr.st battlegrounds, now the title of a feature film. to see how much has changed and how much work still remains. our report tonight from nbc's rahema ellis in selma, alabama. >> reporter: it's morning in selma, and kids head to school in the shadow of history. they celebrate dr. martin luther king's birthday proud that he was once here. >> people just think that oh selma's just a little place. it's nothing big, but the size really doesn't matter. >> reporter: this predominantly black city of 20,000 is quiet now, and struggling economically but rich with the lessons of how people marched with change. nearly 50 years ago as they crossed the bridge for the right to vote people were beaten by police in what became known as bloody sunday. joanne bland was there, just 11 years old. >> people lay everywhere bleeding not moving. >> reporter: terrance grandfather also marched. >> they put him in jail for four days. >> reporter: he's one of a group of students we spoke with at brantly elementary.

dr. martin luther king jr. we also remember that he thought for changes in policy. to get things done. for years, dr. king's ideas were not widely accepted or popular. some tried to discredit him as a radical, but he kept pushing forward. and today we live the progress we worked so hard for. on this day i'm also reminded of dr. king's letter from the birmingham jail. his open letter written in 1963 defending nonviolent resistance and saying there's a, "moral responsibility to fight unjust laws." he wrote that powerful letter from his jail cell in the jefferson county courthouse. today, on his day, that courthouse is closed in recognition of the holiday named for dr. king. think about that progress. it's fitting the latest issue of "new yorker" depicts dr. king surrounded by other men who lost their lives senselessly. the issue of policing is the powerful civil rights fight of this age. today is not a day off. it's a day on. a day of action because that is dr. king's legacy. earlier today, the president and his f

dr. martin luther king. he was born january 15 1929. he was assassinated april 4, 1968 at the lorraine motel in memphis, tennessee. he was just 39 years old. while dr. king is primarily remembered as a civil rights leader, he also championed the cause of the poor, organizing the poor people's campaign to address issues of economic justice. dr. king was also a fierce critic of u.s. foreign policy and the vietnam war. in 1964, dr. king became the youngest recipient of the nobel peace prize. days before he received that award in oslo, norway, dr. king traveled to london. on december 7, 1964, dr. king gave a speech sponsored by the british group christian action about the civil rights struggle in the united states as well as the anti-apartheid movement in south africa. the speech was recorded by saul bernstein, working as the european correspondent for pacifica radio. his recording was recently discovered a director of the pacifica radio archives. this is that address by dr. martin luther king jr. >> i want to talk about our struggle in the
