dr. scott harrington. investigators say it was an unsanitary, chaotic and contaminated mess. straight to susan candiotti now live from tulsa. susan, have a lot of people shown up for the test so far? >> reporter: we know of about 200 so far. we'll get final numbers later tonight. the state asking 7,000 patients of dr. harrington's to be tested. that's after state inspectors here in oklahoma found what they call deplorable practices including expired drugs and rusty dental instruments that would have been used during oral surgery. you can imagine what patients are going through. this all started after authorities found a patient diagnosed -- or rather testing positive for hiv and hepatitis. subsequent tests show he was negative for hiv. but still authorities are very worried about cross contamination. we spoke with a teenager and her mother. this young lady was tested today. >> hiv and hepatitis b and c are really hard things to live with. i have been to a lot of school things about them. i have learned about them. some of my family is living wit. if i get sick i could be sick

dr. scott harrington, and more than 400 of them were tested today for hiv and hepatitis. they are among thousands of patients that may have been exposed to hepatitis or hiv through harrington's office. susan candiotti is in tulsa with more. >> reporter: hundreds of patients lined outside the health department to be tested after dental inspectors found deplorable conditions at the office of scott harrington, an oral surgeon. he was using expired drugs and dental instruments that were rusty, and all of this began when a patient tested positive for hiv and hepatitis c, and he later tested negative for hiv, but they are worried about cross-examination. they are angry and worried, and we talked to one of his patie s patients. >> those are really hard things to live with. if i get sick, i could be sick for a long time, you know. i just -- it just freaks me out a little knowing that this could kill me. >> do you think he should be charged criminally? >> if all of this turns out to be the case i don't think he should be allowed to practice anymore. you know, as far as criminal ch

dr. scott harrington were tested for hepatitis and hiv, among the thousands of harrington's patients who may have been exposed to hepatitis or even hiv through visits to his office. susan candiotti is in tulsa with more. >> reporter: it's not the way marisa smith hoped to celebrate her 18th birthday. a trip with her dad to the tulsa health department. you're about to go in to get tested. what are your emotions right now? >> i'm pretty nervous. i don't like needles. i don't like really testing. after this whole ordeal, i just want to be clean. >> reporter: free from hepatitis b and c and hiv. smith is one of dr. harrington's 7,000 patients who might have been exposed to those viruses because of what's called risky practices by the doctor and his staff. >> it makes my skin crawl. it's horrifying. >> reporter: marissa's mom says dr. harrington took out her daughter's wisdom teeth in june 2011. what do you remember about getting your wisdom teeth out? >> i just thought he was a really nice guy, like there wasn't going to be any problems. obviously now i don't really feel like that. >> report

dr. scott harrington. and that's what prompted investigators to go to the office and they found deplorable conditions including using expired drugs, and improper sterlization of equipment and rusty dental tools that would go inside your mouth. that's when they decided we have to screen all of the former patients, at least 7,000 of them, at least that's the number they know of, and that's as far as the records go back. here is a former patient. >> we are all very concerned and, you know, apprehensive. you know, we just don't know until we actually do get tested, you know, whether or not -- it's just one of those things, you know. but we are all very concerned. >> susan, how are the testing going to work? >> reporter: it's going to take place over my shoulder, and this place is run by the health department and they are running the screenings and they are going to have to come in and give three samples of blood and be tested for hiv and hepatitis b and c, and it will take about two to three weeks before they

dr. scott harrington. the dentist currently is facing 17 complaints filed by the state board of dentistry after inspectors found that he had deplorable conditions in his office. allegedly including use of filthy instruments, improper sterilization of dental instruments, using drugs that were expired among many other alleged violations. now, people will be coming here today to be screened for hepatitis "b" and "c" as well as hiv, and i asked one of the officials here what will happen after those tests are taken. >> it will take approximately two to three weeks for patients to receive test results. if someone receives a negative test result, they'll be notified via mail. if anyone were to test positive, they would receive a personal contact to reveal their results. >> reporter: health officials are telling the community they don't believe that they're facing an outbreak of hiv and hepatitis, but they're trying to tamp down any possibility of panic here in this area by organizing these free screenings. and, r

dr. scott harrington is accused of running a practice so disgustingly unsanitary that he may have exposed thousands of patients to hepatitis or hiv. my colleague ed lavendera is on the story live with us in tulsa. ed, the head of the state dental board is saying when inspectors went into this place, they were, and i'm quoting them, physically sick. how much are we finding out about what they found? >> reporter: well, all these investigations or these visits to this dental practice you see behind me have happened over the course of the last two weeks. i'll give you just some of the highlights in the complaint that they have filed against dr. harrington. some of the things that they had found inside. rusted and unsterilized equipment, reused needles, nonsterile gaus, open vials of drugs answer even one drug vial that had expired in 1993. and as you mentioned, when the investigators on on the couple visits that they have made me and speaking with the assistants, they felt sick, and they described the practice here as a menace to the community. so very serious allegations that are being levie

dr. scott harrington tested positive for h.i.v. and hepatitis c while showing no warning signs. inspectors say they combed through the dentist office and that was a disaster. they say they found a slew of contamination issues. for example, they say the dentist used a separate set of instruments for people he knew carried infectious diseases. those instruments had eventually turned rusty. the doctor used outdated drugs. one vial they found expired 20 years ago. and the violations didn't end there. >> he was allowing his dental assistant to do iv sedation. that is a major violation under our state and it's allowing someone to practice unauthorized dentistry within your office. >> shepard: a spokeswoman for the health department says they do not know how long the dentist had been committing these violations because he had been practicing in that city for 36 years. the director of the board of dentistry calls this unprecedented event. those health officials say they have sent out letters to 7,000 of his current and former patients urging each and every one get tested for hepb, hepat

also, we have colton scott, one of dr. harrington's patient.what kind of health violations are we talking about in this dentist office. >> reporter: a long list of allegations made against the doctor when they came in here just a couple of weeks ago. they started taking a closer look and inspecting the tools and instruments that the doctor and his assistants were using. in some cases, they found some of the instruments had been rusted away. they say that is important, because it is impossible to stair looiz those after they have been used. remember, this is an oral surgeon. this isn't someone who isn't just doing simple cleanings. these are invasive procedures. a lot of blood involved. it is impossible to sterilize equipment that has been rusted health owe visions say. as well as assistants that are not qualified to do the work they were doing. on the couple of days they went to inspect the offers, they literally walked out of the dentist office feeling sick. >> ed, what happens next here? where is this guy? where is this dentist? >> reporter:
