failed in this evacuation and we had to rely on groups like operation task forces like pineapple and dunkirkate department to work with to help get these americans and interpreters left behind out. but the retaliation has been severe, chris. stories of interpreters being taken out to their families and watching their wives and families being beheaded, executed before they execute the interpreter. this is not a new and improved taliban, this is the same old taliban they are reverting back to with the same brutal practices, and you know, there's reports also -- i was on the phone last weekend with top officials at dod and state trying to get 250 orphaned girls, afghan orphaned girls from the university of, from the music -- you know, they are musicians come out of the country, hadop the gate to let them in. now they've returned and now they are under taliban enslavement and we know that they marry off young women as young as 12, many times 14 years old. it's a very sick culture and they treat women like property. i worry about the women left behind as well. >> chris: let me pick up on this, be

the whole -- there are all these articles and media coverage of digital dunkirk, private citizens usingut of afghanistan. and it's wonderful that all these amazing people are doing this. it also is a huge condemnation of the inability of the u.s. government, don't you think? >> well, again, i don't know how you ultimately, you know, argue with getting 130,000 people out of afghanistan. that's a pretty stunning number that the united states was able to get out. i understand that doesn't encompass every single person that we would want to protect, but in a two-week period of time following the unexpected overnight collapse of the afghan government and military, i still think that's a pretty impressive number. of course that was supplemented by all of these private-sector individuals. we shouldn't diminish the accomplishment of the administration. obviously there were mistakes made. obviously it could've been better. but that is not a small thing to do to get that number of people out in that short amount of time. >> senator chris murphy, thank you soechl for your time today. >>> the schoo

larger than that of the british from dunkirk. and it was put together that morning by this incredible makeshift armada of pleasure yachts -- some of them literally stolen from the marinas of lower manhattan -- ferry boats, tugboats, fishing vessels, and all sorts of sort of civilian watercraft piloted by civilians pulling out and doing everything that they could to get people off of lower manhattan, 500,000 people evacuated from lower manhattan by boat that morning. led by, organized by a single young lieutenant in the u.s. coast guard named michael day, who winds up with the pilots from the sandy hook benevolent pilots association, sort of coordinating this rescue effort on lower manhattan. and simply puts out a radio call saying all available boats, anyone who can come to lower manhattan. and they fill the day with just this incredible armada. lieutenant day says in his oral history i broke more laws that day than i have enforced in the totality of the rest of the 30 year coast guard career.
